LAKEPORT – Lake County Animal Care and Control will hold a grand opening celebration this week for its new shelter.

The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at the new shelter, located at 4949 Helbush Drive, across from the Lake County Jail.

The new, 7,800-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility was opened to the public April 28, as Lake County News has reported. Construction on the $2 million project began in April of 2007.

When staff moved to the new facility in April, they left behind the cramped, 1940s-era facility located behind the Lake County Agriculture Department on Lakeport Boulevard.

The shelter, in its current phase, has roughly the same number of kennels as the old – 34 kennels for dogs, 38 kennels for cats and 24 kennels for feral cats, plus 16 dog isolation kennels.

Another planned construction phase will double that capacity and add a clinic for treating animals on site. A barn and livestock pens also will be added, officials reported.

Animal Care and Control invites the community to attend the grand opening and visit the new facility this Thursday. Refreshments will be served.

For more information call Animal Care and Control, 263-0278.

I HAVE BEEN THERE

and I must say, that it is one of the most modern and cleanest facilities I have ever been to in the state. The staff was very curtius and helpful, and that,in itself, scores an "A+" from me.

with the leaning post holding up the roof over the entrance? And who came up with the lame sign? 78 square feet? Kinda small, ain't it! WELL over $2 mil and it's no bigger, this project wasn't handled right, and the real problem (un-fixed animals) still isn't being properly addressed.

Hey smurf,
You have an attitude problem. Were you on the Animal Care and Control advisory commitee? Maybe you could have done a better job? Obviously 78sq ft is a misprint. The sign and entrance look great, as if it matters.
The staff at Animal Control work their asses off and having a new facility with good ventilation will save a lot of animals and cut down on the spread of the all too common respiratory infections that spread like wildfire. Animal control staff personally brings all newly adopted dogs and cats to veterinary hospitals for spaying and neutering before their new owners take them home. It will be extremely difficult to staff a veterinarian at the shelter due to the severe shortage of veterinarians. Most of the veterinary hospitals in the county are desperately trying to attract and hire veterinarians as it is. The shortage of veterinarians is widespread across the country. What is your solution?
Work with what you have....

I think smurf has a point regarding the leaning post, at the least. Otherwise, it is great to have this new facility, with its proposed expansion in mind.

All pet owners will need to be encouraged to spay and neuter their animals, whether or not they use the services of the shelter.

While we can all recognize the need for animal shelters, we should all strive to limit that need.
