Clerk's office prepares to issue same-sex marriage licenses PDF Print E-mail

LAKEPORT – With the California Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriages going into effect on Monday at 5 p.m., county officials have been gearing up to issue marriage licenses and perform civil ceremonies.

On Monday, Cathy Saderlund, the county's assistant auditor-controller, said the County Clerk/Auditor-Controller's Office would be ready to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples during normal business hours on Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is located in room 209 on the second floor of the courthouse at 255 N. Forbes.

The California Supreme Court's decision last month makes California the second state – the first was Massachusetts – to legalize gay marriage.

Because the clerk's office has limited staffing and only one computer capable of issuing the marriage licenses, couples must make appointments to come in and go through the half-hour-long process, she said.

Saderlund said the office currently has some appointments pending for couples planning to come in and apply.

While the clerk's office hasn't yet started issuing licenses, there has been a lot of work to do in modifying every one of the marriage-related forms the department handles, which are done in both English and Spanish, Saderlund explained.

Lake County's clerk also offers civil marriage ceremonies upon request, which is a service that a county an offer but that the state doesn't require, said Saderlund.

A deputy county clerk presides over civil ceremonies, she said, which are conducted by appointment only and are scheduled on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, based on availability of the Board of Supervisors chambers.

“In 2006, we performed 152, in 2007, 114,” she said.

Anticipating higher demand due to the new marriage ruling this week, the clerk's office has extended its hours and will take appointments for ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Saderlund said applications can be downloaded from the county's Web site, completed in advance and brought in for processing.

The cost for a marriage license is $64, with a confidential license costing $70, according to the clerk's office Web site. Marriage ceremonies cost $35. The department accepts cash only, no credit cards or checks.

Forms and additional information can be found at www.co.lake.ca.us/Government/DepartmentDirectory/AuditorController/County_Clerk/Marriage_License.htm or by calling our office at 263-2311.

Wrong on so many levels

not the gay marriage, the printing of official forms in a language other than English. Gotcha  !! Congrats to all the newlyweds, I hope you find much happiness in your marriages. Refreshing after the last 7 years to see a boost in Civil Liberties. Dare I hope it's a trend?
today a new report

shows clear scientific evidence that sexual oreintation is based on genetics with clear differences in the structure of the brain FROM BIRTH! Got that darrell? Not that science or any other form of genuine logic ever had any meaning to a true believer like yourself.

God made the queeer folk that way on purpose so you have to love them the way they are like all of God's other creations. I think the reason for it is adjustable population control, when conditions warrent lower or higher birth rates the gays will increase or diminish as dictated by nature. No sin involved just evolution, so find a new group to demonize and spew bigotry against!

The Dream Lives On...
written by California Sun, June 17, 2008
No one could say it better than Martin Luther King, Jr. himself:

"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

We're all in this world together, so let's start acting like it! smilies/cheesy.gif

God Bless America!
So now, let\'s move on

I know it's an important day and we've all waited a long time, but after 42 years of living as couple within the community, a wedding seems a little anti-climatic. Let's move on to a time when no one stops to think about "what" is getting married, just "who".

Nice quotes "California Sun". Thanks.

to burst your bubble but records exist that prove MLK was a womanizer, charlatan, fraud and a plagiarist of his doctoral thesis. He had about as much integrity as Sharpton, Jackson and Wright.

for a news source again stewy? MLK had an affair and probably lifted a few lines from someone else's work at some time, but let's not put him in the league of sharpton or jackson, who are decidedly mixed blessings. Wright is something else, he's just a fool unlike the other two who are mostly out for themselves. MLK had his faults but they FAR overshadowed his shortcomings, remember Lincoln chased whorres, got drunk and murdered Indians.

The attorneys are smiling from ear to ear. This government needs to get out of the business telling who we can marry and who we can't. All the problems we have we drag this up and put it on our plate. Have some room on the dolmen?
