UKIAH – The Mendocino College Foundation announces the Kathleen Kohn Fetzer Family Foundation has donated $15,000 for scholarships in the Mendocino College Nursing Program.

The scholarships will be awarded to Linda King of Lakeport, Aphrael Dunston of Ukiah and Lorri Arreguin of Ft. Bragg.

These three students have demonstrated a commitment to the nursing program and have successfully completed their first year at Mendocino College. Home health care nursing is the focus of the scholarships.

“The College and the Foundation Board greatly appreciate the Fetzer family’s ongoing commitment to the students of Mendocino College and the community,” said Kathy Lehner, Mendocino College superintendent/president. “These scholarships provide encouragement to students pursuing careers in an area of critical importance to our communities – home health care.”

Kathleen Mary Fetzer, daughter of Kathleen Kohn Fetzer and manager of the Fetzer Family Foundation, credits her mother for helping her to understand the specialized skills required of a home health care professional.

“It’s a profession that calls for a unique combination of skill, experience and compassion; it truly is a calling,” she said.

Trends in the medical field suggest a growing demand for home health care professionals. “With the focus of patient care moving from in-hospital to in-home care, there definitely is a need for more registered nurses in home health care and hospice nursing,” noted Barbara French, RN, PhD, program director and nursing instructor at Mendocino College. “And with small, rural communities such as ours, this need becomes even more important.”

Kathleen Mary Fetzer, CFP, CLU, is also a strong advocate for planned giving. Serving as the family’s financial planner and going through the experience of creating the Kathleen Kohn Fetzer Family Foundation have given her the deeply rooted passion she now has for planned giving.

“Planned giving offers the opportunity to think about what values you’d like to pass on to the next generation,” observes Fetzer. “You can help shape the future through donations to college scholarships – and there’s a tremendous need for funding support at Mendocino College.”

The foundation was established by Kathleen Kohn Fetzer as a legacy for her family and in memory of her late husband, Bernard “Barney” Fetzer.

The Foundation serves the Mendocino-Lake Community College District and was formed in 1984 with $5,000 in seed funds. More than $675,000 in scholarships has been distributed to students, and other educational programs and district-wide projects have been supported by the foundation.
