Bodley: Freedom comes with a price PDF Print E-mail

Last Monday I spent part of my day paying my respect to those who gave their lives for this country. But one thing I realized is that I was the only one from my generation there. What is this world coming to?

It's so crazy that people just don’t get it, every breath of air that you breathe is due to someone giving their life or even just a part of it so we could live free. Freedom is not free and it comes with a price.

Today I wonder for the first time in my life if I was one of them where would my friends be on the day of thanks and memory to those brothers and sisters who gave all so we could be free? I give my life to this country regardless of outcome. One thing I know as a soldier and a free person is you can't take what someone gives, and not everyone is willing to give that much so that others can live with the freedom they have.

I hope we as a whole never forget and lose sight of what this country is about. All the free choices we have and my choice is that I will remember those before me and I will stand for what they gave their lives for.

I’m a father first and a soldier second and will never let my kids think that its just a parade and that its just another day to have fun. Its a day to remember and we will as a family and as free people.

County resident Sgt. Christopher M. Bodley spent four years in the Marines and now serves with the California Army National Guard.

Too true. While there were many to put up the flags at the cemeteries and again to take them down most were post 50 in age.

Those who now serve and who have served in the past need share their service so that our children may understand what it takes to have the freedoms we hold dear.

It is possible to pay tribute without parades. Thank a veteran!

Chris and you've raised a question that haunts us daily. My husband and I went to the car show on Saturday to take pics for our sons, enjoy the creativity of car builders and to let people know about Operation Tango Mike's
Comedy Nite. The response was profoundly depressing. They want their freedom and expensive hobbies but you best not remind then that a price was paid for it. I don't know what to call them other than the "Entitled". They expect and want all - at no cost to them. They have no sense of history, only that sense of entitlement. Most can't comprehend that it is possible to support the men and women that serve this county and still hate war. I did see one upside regarding youth and Memorial Day, there were some High School students in Upper Lake to help with the Flags. I came away with the feeling they left with more than they arrived with when it came to the price paid for their 3 day weekend and ipods. We can only hope they "get it" or before long, there will be nothing to get. Stay safe Chris.

Those that are not asked and donot serve can little understand that life you see slip away.I donot fault them, how can you chastise, the unawareness is pervasive. Donna hope yours are well. My son has the rangers and they were at the cemetery. The kids looked smart. Semper Fi Chris.

Freedom is not free. I have no use for the street rats that want to tear this country down and disrespect our fallen brothers and sisters who gave all so there can be freedom of expression, including the rat's eye view. I am glad all Veteran's issues are getting the attention they deserve.

Semper Fi Chris
