Safe house fundraiser planned for May 17 PDF Print E-mail

LAKE COUNTY – A fundraising event dedicated to the opening of a homeless youth shelter, or safe house, for Lake County will take place on Saturday, May 17 at Rob Roy Golf Course.

A four-person scramble golf tournament will be held, with check-in time from 11:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Kathy Fowler has graciously donated a car for a hole-in-one on the second hole.

The need for the safe house is critical. The numbers of homeless youth in the US today are rising at alarming rates and Lake County is no different. Current statistics show that on any given day in Lake County, between 600 and 1000 children under the age of 18 are homeless.

Some of these children are runaways, some have been kicked out of their homes (throwaways), but the vast majority, simply have no place to sleep or be safe during the night.

The safe house will be a 24 hour facility that will provide temporary housing, access to health services, crisis services, family and individual counseling and life skills training to homeless youth.

The need for this facility has been discussed by service agencies, law enforcement and local schools for many years, but we have now hit the critical mass numbers that requires our community to take immediate action.

The Lake County Community Action Agency, under the direction of Executive Director Georgina Lehne, has taken the lead role in the development and creation of this highly needed facility. This nonprofit agency has experience in transitional shelter operations for families, food and clothing distributions, New Beginnings, self-sufficiency education and support, and is the new overseeing agency for youth services formally know as Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club.

Please help us address the large and growing population of homeless kids by attending this wonderful day of golf, gourmet dining, live music and fun.

Following the tournament, at 5 p.m., there will be a delicious western buffet. Many local businesses have donated special items for the silent and live auction which will take place throughout the evening. The cost of golf, cart and the dinner is $85, or $40 for dinner only (tax-deductible).

previous safe houses they have had in our area were nothing but a place for (mainly) women to go when they were evicted from their homes because they bought drugs instead of paying the rent. Then next thing you know their friends & so called abusive husbands are cruising the neighborhood and their all sitting along side of the road just a block away from the safe house getting drunk and making drug deals. Oh and don't forget about the kids who get moved from school to school. There was the one who moved here from Redding, lived in a safe house until some government agency paid her rent for her in Lucerne and then her and her husband moved into that house together, she went to the safe house because they couldn't afford to re-locate on their own, so we paid for it. If these safe houses were used properly then I would be all for them. And we have already advertised that the next safe house will be at the corner of Live Oak & Hiway 29. Do you advertise when you are trying to hide???

CA-
This is a place for children who are homeless, not adults. Children who don't have a safe or reliable place to live. I was homeless at 15, so I know how hard it is to get by when in that kind of situation. There are not a lot of positive experiences to choose from like that. It is terribly important to be safe and get your life organized at that age in order to make it as a full functioning adult.

It's a tall order, overcoming the problems that got them into this situation in the first place. Getting them help as teens could save them wasted years as dysfunctional adults.

I applaud the effort; too bad that some have shared in the experiences such as those that California wrote about; but I would say those experiences should not keep us from trying to affect some kind of positive change.

The "safe house" is just a contact place for these kids to gain access to a vast wealth of services awaiting them should they make the choice to conform to society's will (the rules); unfortunately the price is too high for some of these kids; they want the freedom that the streets offer; safe or not; but if we reach one child out of ten or one out of a hundred we consider the effort worth it.

Too many of these kids missed out on being born into a family with a structured lifestyle; let alone being born into a family with any kind of sense of personal responsibility. There but for the grace of God go you or me! Our choice is one of; we can support such efforts today or pay the price later with more jails and prisons! Involvement on our part is what it is going to take to make sure such endeavors are successful. Ours is the responsibility; to make sure that those involved in implementing such projects are not just creating a job for themselves; but are truly serving those they are professing to wanting to help. It is not a smart move to not keep a close eye on your investments (i.e. donations and tax dollars in the way of grants); get involved; keep a close eye on the money!
