Thompson returns from Iraq trip PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON – Last weekend, as chairman of the House Intelligence subcommittee on Terrorism, Human Intelligence, Analysis and Counterintelligence, Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) visited several sites throughout Iraq to conduct oversight of intelligence-related matters.

A statement he released following his return from Iraq seemed to confirm Thompson's stance on the need to get US troops out of Iraq. His spokesperson Anne Warden said Thompson has been to Iraq twice before.

“In addition to meeting with General Petraeus, Ambassador Crocker, as well as some of my own constituents, I had the honor of spending some time with our troops,” he said. “Our brave men and women in uniform continue to do an amazing job despite being overextended and caught in the middle of a civil war.

“You need to look no further than the recent increase in attacks on the Green Zone – an internationally-controlled, fully-protected area in Baghdad – and the ongoing threat of Improvised Explosive Devices to know how important strong, effective intelligence is to ensuring our troops return home as fast and safe as possible.

“This war has given Iran the opportunity to strengthen its influence in the region. After my visit, I believe more strongly than ever that Iran’s threat must be addressed by bringing the world together through a surge in diplomacy. Strong intelligence gathering capabilities is the key to peacefully nipping the problem of Iran in the bud. It’s also the key to fighting terrorism worldwide, improving our national security and keeping us out of future wars.

“I continue to support immediately beginning the redeployment of our troops out of Iraq and giving the Iraqi government full responsibility for their national security,” he said. “I believe we must work with the United Nations to develop an international strategy for controlling the violence in Iraq and ensuring it does not spread across borders, which would certainly lead to a regional civil war.”

I know you still have your lips fastened to Hillary-the-war-wh---'s behind, but try REAL hard not to make us laugh about the "threat" from Iran. That country will look VERY different in ten years as their baby-boomers take control, the 40 million kids who grew up spending more time with I-pods than the Koran.
Besides, Ahmedinajad has an approval rating just barely above bush, and that last presidential election they had was more honest than ours, even with the limited choices on the ballot.
The bottom line here is that Iran is a self-solving problem, this is the time to play nice and show we can have some sort of normal relationship with them.

and spot on. The only thing that will screw up the new generation in Iran is if we do attack them. I've read many articles written by Iranians about the culture there and the differences between the generations. They very much like the western worlds technology, style and opportunities but have made it very clear - ATTACK US AND WE WILL FALL IN BEHIND OUR GOVERNMENT. They're alot like most Americans - hate the current government but still love their country. We create a problem and Barney Fife sez we need to nip it in the bud. Well, at least your office tells me you aren't with the Blue Dogs this time around on trying to screw our veterans.

If he is unable to see my rights are looked after, how would you expect me to know he is aware of squat. Just another male that did nothing but leave a corrupt system in place.

I am glad to vote for Mike for another term. He represents my view on how to deal with the mess in Iraq.

After being cajoled, pestered and queried forever, big Mike finally did sign on the bill for assured funding for Veteran's health care. Let's see where that goes. I notice he was conspicuously absent from the bridge dedication with the convienent trip to Iraq. At least I think his aide Brad is an ok guy.
James - Your right. Registered | 05-13-2008 11:13:59
I have no problem with your right to back Mike as I would hope you would respect my right to disagree. The Thompson I know cared less for my rights under the constitution because it was a personnal matter. County employees violated the trust placed in them with the result being malfeasance. I would agree Iraq is at the top of the scale and the actings of bureaucrats to keep us there. That said we have major problems at home not being adressed and thompson is no more than a mouth for the party line. Semper Fi
