CLEARLAKE – Clearlake Police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for a Sunday night murder.

Erik Michael McPherson, 18, of Clearlake has been arrested and charged with stabbing to death 40-year-old Nicolai Chukreeff, also of Clearlake, in an incident at the Harbor Lite Motel, according to a report from Lt. Mike Hermann.

Hermann said McPherson had been a person of interest in the homicide since early on in the investigation.

Police arrested McPherson Wednesday on an unrelated theft warrant after they found him walking on Woodland Avenue in Clearlake. Hermann said McPherson later was booked into the Lake County Jail on the warrant after being questioned about Chukreeff's murder.

Hermann said police charged McPherson with Chukreeff's homicide on Friday.

According to Hermann, Chukreeff and several other people had been having drinks in the Harbor Lite's gazebo on Sunday night when McPherson arrived.

An argument of some kind between McPherson and Chukreeff ensued, said Hermann. It's still unknown what led McPherson to allegedly stab Chukreeff.

A Tuesday autopsy said that Chukreeff died as the result of a single stab wound to the chest, as Lake County News has reported.

McPherson fled from the scene in a red vehicle that police issued a be-on-the-lookout advisory for on Sunday night. Hermann said the vehicle has since been located.

The case, said Hermann, will be submitted to the Lake County District Attorney's Office Monday morning for review.

Clearlake Police are continuing to investigate the murder, Hermann said.

“We still have a lot more interviews to do,” he said, adding that they'll also be re-interviewing everyone they've talked to so far.

However, Hermann said police had enough evidence to charge McPherson with the murder on Friday.

Police aren't discussing if Chukreeff and McPherson – both of whom worked in construction – knew each other, said Hermann.

However, McPherson was well-known to Clearlake Police, with Hermann reporting that officers had had many contacts with the teenager, who remains in jail on a no-bail hold.

Anyone with information about this are asked to contact Detective Sergeant Tom Clements at 994-8251.

A heck of a guy
written by kd006, May 09, 2008
Yup, just look at that 707 tat on his neck, you don't think it could be gang related do you. No disrespect for the victim he may have been an innocent bystander or preceived as a threat by this monkey.

I only hope the CPD, county dot's all their "I's" and crosses all their "T's" and adds gang enhancement to the charges so no one has to deal with him again for a long long time.
cute picture!

The direction Lake County is taking is sickening. Thank Godness there is an officer by the name of Hermann, and his detectives on his watch. They got the guy. If this isn't the perfect example of "gang" violence, what is?
How lovely....................

Not Lake County\'s direction
written by ekarnowski, May 10, 2008
This isn't the direction we are taking, but these lost souls are in Every county in every state. It just seems like they are more prevalent here to us. Yes, we have our share of gang violence and alcohol abuse too. Hopefully we will continue our prevention and education efforts to provide alternatives.

Maybe the 707 tattoo is in case he gets lost? Seriously, is this a new gang - the 707's? That is really scary for us, if so. I haven't seen it anywhere but here. Anyone know?

I hope Lake County will be able to use the full penalties on this guy and help spread the word that these types of a_ _holes aren't tolerated here. I so hope this was just a gangster wanne be who was trying to create his own gang - otherwise, this is bad news for us, as the victim has paid the ultimate price for daring to speak to this yahoo.

Shores,

No this is not a wanabe, I don't remember if the 707 is exclusive to the "N" or the "S" gang or just a commonly used identifier for north coast gangs. As pressure grows on them in Petaluma, Santa Rosa and other places they just move here and continue their activities. I hope for all our sakes that law enforcement comes to grips and admits we have a gang problem before they get too entrenched here. I see more and more Colors, hand signs and all the trappings of gangs every day. Look around any day and you will see them wearing a hooded sweatshirt when it's 90 outside or Raiders Jacket or any of the other gang uniforms.

Perhaps Elizabeth could run an article and educate those of us who read what to look out for.

What kd006 said. I'd really like to know much more about gang activity in Lake County and what is being done to combat it. It's important for all of us, especially those with kids in local schools.

kd006,you are right. The 707 Mafia Crips are their names-
They are one of the offshoots from the Rohnert Park Playboys. They use the color blue and the "707 MAFIA CRIP" (707 MC) name.

Thanks, I knew it was on of the two Duhh! But now I Know it's a Sureño gang, and one of the blue ones! More info is needed as it's just so hard to keep up with all these monkeys. By the way when is open season for monkeys? Do I need to get into a lottery to bag a few or can you just shoot them and take em to the weight station with a toe tag?

Tragedy

It's a sad time for Nicks family and friends. As someone who knew Nick I must say I am grateful that the scumbag loser implicated has been apprehended.
It sickens me that we as a society have allowed this gang crap to not only continue but to escalate to the point we are immune to the reprehensible acts they inflict on our everyday lives.
I as a Mother am teaching my children morals. Where are the damn parents. A part of me really wishes we could hold bad parents accountable for the unexcusable actions brought on by their negligence in rearing their children.
This boy took an innocent life before even begining to truly live his own. What the hell does that say about us as a society. Sadly we are a nation that gives too many chances. Hopefully this scumbag won't be given the second chance to kill again. I hope you receive the death penalty for Nicks life in which you stole...

I don't condone what he did, I think it's awful, but I also see that he just turned 18. What kind of life did he have, there must be more to him than this, he's so young.
I am somewhat shocked at the things people have written here and wonder if that anger and outrage is what he has known his whole life?
