Riley: Be sure you know what you're signing PDF Print E-mail

The gentlemen who questioned Mr. Berkey’s objection to the petitioner in front of Wal-Mart inadvertently misunderstood his letter or was trying to make his own point by suggesting that Mr. Berkey was paranoiac.

I was with Mr. Berkey my partner of 34 years, and we questioned only his tactics, not his constitutional rights. The manager of Wal-Mart said that the gentleman in question refused to give his name, or the agents who have paid him to collect signatures. I would think that any voter would need this information before he signed the petition.

What is the gentleman hiding? If his signature collecting is completely legitimate, why doesn’t he divulge the simple information any other petitioner gladly submits.

At no time did we say NO DON’T SIGN, please read the letter again. We merely suggested – be sure you know what you are signing.

The irony of so-called "Christians" petitioning anti-gay-marriage-rights is one of the irksome religious violations.
Using the name of God to separate, stigmatize and deny rights to others enrages me. Whatever our denomination,we are each a precious child of God and loved, unconditionally, for who we are- just as we are.
For something much more vital to our community, someone should be actively petitioning outside Wal-Mart to ban the sale of alcohol. There are more establishments selling alcohol in Lake County than any other county around, proportionately. Now, This is a problem.
Peace.

rule of thumb is if they are getting paid then don't sign, as you won't find volunteers shilling for corporations, who usually fund paid signeture gatherers. And make sure it's just the one they describe you are signing, they may (if they're paid) try to get you to sign multiple petitions (another sign of the paid type).

If you ban the sale of alcohol at Wal-Mart, does that really solve the problem? Anyone could simply walk over to e Ray's Grocery Store and get all the alcohol he wanted.

Maybe I am mistaken, but the last time I checked gay's cannot be married and be entitled to all the rights of a married couple in California, so what's the problem? Let's not still up controversy where none exists.

Good points made by everyone. And yes, same sex couples do have rights in California that heterosexual couples do not.

Personally, I don't get the problem with marriage and its definition. Who cares? Who loses if same sex couples are married in the eyes of the law? How can anyone invoke "God" to foist their beliefs into our CIVIL law.

As far as the alcohol sales at Walmart -a none issue. Unless there is a total prohibition (heaven forbid) there is no point.

Doesn't anyone see the ingruity of a disproportionately volume of alcohol sales establishments in Lake County,a
community riddled with excessively high incidences of alcoholism and other drug abuse?

A parallel is visible in any poor city neighborhoods i.e. Hunters Point in SF where there is nothing but billboards advertising liquor and tobacco to exploit the poor and the same disproportionate alcohol sales venues.

It is more subtle in rural Lake County but it is a reality and has the same results.

Aside from the Family Values stance of Wal-Mart, how do alcohol sales fit into that?

would be proud of your efforts. Walmart does not advertising on billboards regarding tobacco and booze. Since the WM super stores have it all, why not Clearlake? I like the idea of one stop shopping. I don't much care for the petition panhandlers either. I don't think most have any problem with the domestic partner issue. It's just when you try to change the definition of marriage, I have a problem. Civil union - OK. Gay marriage - an oxymoron as defined. And yes, I know THEY have their own version of the Bible and Webster, etc. I do not pander to that.
