Huff: Make sure they're never bored again PDF Print E-mail
Written by Billie Huff

My name is Billie Huff and I believe that one of the girls that microwaved her hamster is my fiance's niece. I cannot even comprehend someone doing something like that to any animal and I hope that the girls are charged with felony animal cruelty and are sent to a detention facility for the max amount of time they can be given.

I firmly believe that if you are able to hurt or abuse an animal in your teen years that there is a possibility for sick people like that to become serial killers. I feel that if they are let off to lightly they won't get the message of how serious something like this is. I feel they should both be made to have extensive counseling, do county authority facility time and a large fine should be tacked on to that so the parents of these girls are aware of the seriousness. I would hope that they are given community service work, volunteer work, yard work, house work whatever it takes to make sure they are never bored again.

Billie Huff lives in Rodeo.

physical work, particularly to help others, to do some good for the community, would be appropriate and highly educational. Detention in Juvi to be pumped full of tranquilizers or some other medication every time they throw a tantrum, and do nothing all day long is not such a great idea (imagine the future activities they could plan during 30 days of boredom).
Counseling requires honesty to actually work, I can't imagine these girls being honest with a counselor or therapist any day soon.

It is refreshing to see someone who acquainted with the family to acknowledge that this is a serious infraction.

Something isn't wired correctly in anyone who abuses animals at such a young age.

Unfortunately incarceration is not necessarily the answer. Intense therapy for the parents and the children may change the outcome when these children reach adulthood.

Yellowwing,
You are right, counseling might help them in later years. The only reason I think a detention facility would be fit for them is because I have a feeling that the most that is going to happen is a slap on the wrist. And once they return home I don't see anything being done except a lot of excuses being made. I can see these girls easily doing more outrageous things for the attention & discipline they don't get at home.

I've got a novel idea, how about making them work, under supervision, at the animal control center in Lakeport, there they would have to take care of unwanted and neglected animals every day for months.
To be inundated with the numbers of animals that need care in this county, could make a real difference in their lives. They may "get it" right away.

about working at AC, and I see we have another fan of mindless punishment here, I love animals as much as anyone but don't see that juvenile hall is the answer. I swear to God people are more worked up about this than they were about the last murder in Clearlake, let's keep some perspective here folks!

As serious as this abuse case is and this over reaction for the girls heads is no more than the frustrations of a society in shock. The other matter of the little girl stabed to death the father forgave, how, I don't know but I could not find myself with words that expressed my outrage of our tolerance with vermin such as him.For me, we forgive too much. How the father can move on is beyond me.

not for the other so much as for yourself, to not drive yourself mad with anger and grief. Forgiveness releases these feelings of anger that can only lead to self-destruction if not properly addressed...we become what we dwell upon, our focus becomes our vision. Forgiveness has nothing to do with any religion, it is a natural part of the healing process. When faced we tragedy, we must choose to heal or perish.

I think we forgive to much and have no doubt most of what we experience is directly the cause of that tolerance. Our deraliction to move on ,get over it or look to the future and forget the past puts us at jeopardy. This philosophy is a danger to our well being. I'll forgive after he is behind bars but justice needs to be served.

does not mean forgetting. People who just want to forget do so because they do not want to heal and instead choose denial.
Our North American culture has become expert at denial, escapism and forgetfulness, as well as at the suppression of all uncomfortable feelings, which when not dealt with fester and lead to pathology. There's the source of so much violence that seem to come out of "nowhere". It comes from what has been suppressed, what has been shoved under the rug by a culture that seem to fear negative emotions and feelings more than any other.

No matter what happens those girls have seen the outrage over their actions. To have this story told in every classroom and them doing the telling would be one thought. Our outrage sends to all how egregious their behavior has been. There was no outcry for that little girl no righteous indignation! She just moved on. well I choose not to forgive or forget how can I? I'm bombbarded with this type of garbage everyday. We have gone insane and our actions show us that outcome. No, would a sane people allow all you see and hear go on?
