Officials investigate puppy dragging case PDF Print E-mail

THIS STORY HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH NEW INFORMATION FROM AN EYEWITNESS.

NICE – County Animal Care and Control officials are investigating a case in which a puppy was dragged behind a vehicle.

The incident, involving an 11-week-old male German shepherd puppy, took place on Tuesday night at Robinson Rancheria Casino's parking lot, according to Sara Schramm of Lake County Animal Care and Control. It appeared to be accidental.

A man who was visiting the county with his family from out of state had the puppy tied to his bumper, said Schramm.

The man apparently was diverted between his children and talking on his cell phone, and didn't notice that the puppy wasn't in the car after the back hatch of his van was closed by another adult in the group, according to Schramm and eyewitness Marcia Porter.

Schramm said an off-duty Animal Care and Control officer happened to be in the area and saw the man take off with the puppy still tied to the vehicle.

The off-duty officer couldn't get to his vehicle in time to try to stop the man, said Schramm.

Meanwhile, Porter took off in pursuit of the man to stop him.

She said by the time she got out of the parking lot and onto the highway the man, who was very upset, had already pulled over and picked up the pup, who she estimated was drug less than a quarter-mile. Porter went with him to Wasson Veterinary Clinic in Lakeport, where she said she takes her own animals.

Animal Care and Control officials were searching for information on the incident Thursday, trying to identify the owner, when they found the dog was at Wasson Memorial.

Wasson Memorial confirmed Thursday that the puppy was being cared for there.

The puppy had abrasions that, in some areas, wore his skin down to the bone, but Wasson representatives said the pup otherwise was actually doing fine.

Schramm said the incident appeared accidental. However, she added, “We're investigating it internally.”

An investigation could take a few weeks to complete, Schramm said.

Porter said she and a friend are donating $200 to help the family with vet bills, which are reportedly several hundred dollars.

She asked community members to donate to Wasson to help the family, which she didn't feel could afford to pay the high bills.

The puppy's injury is a reminder, Animal Care and Control officials said, of the importance of paying special attention when traveling with pets.

With better weather on the way, more people will be taking pets for rides in cars. Officials caution pet owners to secure their pets properly in vehicles and make arrangements to ensure animals aren't left in hot cars or other potentially dangerous conditions, such as being secured to the outside of a vehicle.

didn't this guy ever see National Lampoon's "Summer Vacation"? He's no relation to Chevy Chase, is he? An investigation could take a "few weeks"? Huh? Looks pretty simple to me, seems like a conclusion could be reached a bit sooner than that.

Just curious, why do you take your children and a puppy to a casino? Guess we should be glad he didn't tie the other vulnerable members of his family to the bumper while he went in. I hope the puppy makes a full recovery and perhaps instead of a fine to the court he should make a large donation towards our new shelter. My hubby tells me this is a better idea than my first one, tie this dude to a bumper and ....

Talking on the celly while driving?
With kids in the car?
Too poor for the vet but not for gambling?
Good News

Good News for the pup. The loser refused to pay any of his veterinary care bill. He finally signed it over to Animal Control. Right now the pup is in a new home cuddled up to our big chocolate lab 'Mojo'. I wonder what would have happened to the guy if he had his 2 kids tied up to the bumper when he pulled out of the casino parking lot?
It is so easy to pass judgment

against someone that we don't know. Yes it is awful that this happened, I don't think he did it on purpose. The one thing that comes up for me is that if he had left the pup in the car everyone would be crying foul for that. It sounds like it is working out for the pup and I hope that he makes a full recovery. We should all remember that accidents happen and you never know when it could happen to you.

It's nice to hear you call people "losers" With the high $$$$$$$$ you vets charge it is a wonder anyone except the wealthy can afford to take their pet to you. Wasson Clinic, gouge someone else losers.
That\'s wonderful, Dr!

The family (or I should say the adults in that family) that abandonded the pup... are disgusting! But, Dr. Holmes, I know he will have a wonderful and loving life with you and your family. I don't think people understand how often our local vets get stiffed by animal owners... so I think vets get the short end of the stick on many, many occassions... Kudos to you Dr. Holmes for always being so kind to the critters!

Sorry for passing judgement, or calling the guy a loser, but when you get called in on emergency during dinner, needing to bring your kids in, to someone who had his dog tied up at 7pm when it is not too hot to be in the car while you are at the casino, and having him tell you that he paid 1000$ for the pup and he is very valuable, and then he shows up with 0$ and gets pissed off at you for wanting a payment on the bill, I guess you get a little judgmental. We already have 3 dogs and 3 cats in there that we need to find homes for. Any takers?
I\'d love to help a dog in nee

I am always helping dogs out. Right now I am trying to find a home for a pure bred welsh corgi that someone was going to take to the pound. He's a cool dog He is just tooo much for our household. If I can find a home for him, then I could take one of the 3 from you Chris.
Welsh Corgi?
written by elarson, March 17, 2008
You have a Welsh Corgi? When you say he's too much for your household, is it that he's too energetic, domineering, etc.? I've always been interested in Corgis but don't have any practical knowledge about them. I hear they can be a big dog in a little dog body.
Positive responses

Hey! I'm glad we have got something positive going. Corgis in general are a little domineering, for their size, but great personalities and not many medical problems. A great breed in general and worth a look.
If anyone, with property and no other pets, is interested in 2 beautiful German Shorthair pointers, we have had the pair for over 2 years. They are great with people but have been aggressive towards other animals.
