Christopher: Calling all redbuds! PDF Print E-mail

Do you have a redbud tree on your property? Would you like to help in the native beautification of the Lucerne Creek Park?

If you have a redbud that you would be willing to donate a small portion of a branch to this project please call me at 274-8482. The slender branch will need to have growth nodes on it.

Just imagine how beautiful this stretch of creek will look once these take root and over time start blooming in all their glory in the spring!

Kim Clymire from our great Parks Department is also getting wildflower seeds to help with stream bank stabilization and beautification.

We can make this park breathtaking in natural beauty – a surefire way to catch the tourists' attention/ And maybe catch some of their tourists dollars also.

Thank you for your time.

Donna Christopher lives in Lucerne.

I will pass this along to our garden club. I don't have any redbuds, personally, but I will do what I can to help.

I appreciate all assistance and advice that is out there. Have some seed in soil with 3 different types of "prep" to see if they sprout also, this other way gives you roots and leaf w/i about 2 weeks. Guess we're doing a bit of a science lesson on this endeavor

Donna, I did some research for you. I think your best bet is rooting from cuttings.

For the best results for the rooting process, take cuttings between the leaf nodes and carefully scrape off just the outer layer of bark on the bottom 1/2 inch of the cutting. Then dip it in rooting hormone just before replanting it in native soil.Rooting usually takes about 4 to 8 weeks.

Starting trees from seeds is very time consuming and difficult. Usually, it involves refrigerating, scarring and soaking the seed before planting.

I think your best bet is rooting. However, I am not sure it is the best time of year for it. I would think April would be more successful, unless you are starting them indoors.

I will try to give you a call, today, as some people have already contacted me wanting to help out.

have actually been getting results in about 2 weeks, starting in rockwool then adding native soil. Figured I'd keep adding soil with a gradual reduction in warmth but same amount of light. We want to take advantage of natures free water as much as possible so that figures into actual planting time. Will probably let the neighborhood redbuds tell me when its time to go in the ground, they seem to know best If anyone has any cheapo plastic plant containers (like the 8pack ones or ones that come in flats) they can give to the cause it would be appreciated (274-8482). Have received some great phone calls - Thanks Lake County!
