BlueWolf: Morality and my world PDF Print E-mail
Written by James BlueWolf

I will center my discussion on the concept of morality as I interpret it from a modern indigenous perspective. My opinion represents only my family, not any Tribe or Nation.

I think that those who are carrying this jihad of hatred from both sides cannot be deterred from their paths by words. The direction of this civilization is toward increased terrorism and suffering. Only a complete change of direction will carry us off of this path toward the whirlwind. Modern civilization is enamored with its toys and successes, never examining what price has been paid in human life and destruction for those achievements.

Many of our common citizens recognize deep down that our culture is slipping from its pretentious moral high ground toward a decadent society consumed with violence and the desire to preserve its luxury and status at any cost. Institutional Islam seems intent on keeping its mouth shut while fanatics twist the teachings of their great Man of Peace into exhortations to sacrifice innocent life in suicidal acts of resistance against their age old religious enemies-both Christian and Hebrew. The cycle is endless, with centuries of history to drive it.

I have a quote for you to think about as I babble on. "Morality relates not only to the actions of human beings toward other humans but toward the entire planet as an integrated living being." I suppose that this is the major difference between the three great religions descended from Abraham and the rest of the indigenous world.

The concept of guilt at birth, which teaches that death, violence, and tragedy are unnatural conditions, and the belief in judgment, punishment, and reward has created an absolute fear of death in some, while encouraging acts of violent sacrifice in others the two bloody sides of today's coin of terrorism. Both sides court war, not only in revenge, but in the misguided belief that in causing death one can prevent future deaths. Life by the sword.

I'd like to present another view of morality centered around a Native concept that the entire earth is a living being. Every physical form upon it is comprised of the same elements moving and interacting. Earth, fire, air, water, rocks, trees, animals, and human beings. Indigenous peoples consider all these forms to be alive for differing purposes in our global family. The rock does not speak because that is not its purpose. Human beings have our own purpose. But Indigenous people do not ascribe to humanity any superiority or greater value than our environment because we could not sustain our lives separate from it. If we depend on it, how can we be superior to it?

We are asked to possess three characteristics: respect for Creation, responsibility to act in the best interests of Creation, and gratitude for that Creation. We do not perceive natural violence and death as punishment, but only a mysterious addition to Creation that is, for the moment, beyond the reach of our understanding.

Each moment the sun eats and transforms or kills hydrogen that has taken millions of years to form. On earth death allows for the building blocks of creation to take new forms. When a species suffers extinction there is often an explosion of new life in the areas previously inhabited. Indigenous people rever Creation. I'll say that again. Indigenous people rever Creation. It is all sacred. Every act, every word, every motion of humanity as well as the earth and all our relatives are part of a sacred related family ceremony. Just as the sun eats the hydrogen without remorse, so we are eaten and give back our spirits to Creation. We view death as a natural process. We grieve for our losses, as do any humans, but we know that the basic elements of creation are everlasting and cannot die. No guilt, no blame .

The sacred permeates the lives of Indigenous Peoples because it is perceived to be inherent in every earthly form and movement. This is not simply an intellectual exercise but a deep emotional attachment to Creation. To be very frank, some of our Elders predicted these circumstances would occur because of the seemingly selfish preoccupation some societies have with considering humanity as the preferred species rather than as an integral equal part of a whole earth entity.

But there is a difference between the mysterious order and purpose of natural destruction in Creation and the willful, contentious and calculated violence of human beings purposely disturbing and destroying the very relationships that should give their life meaning, purpose and joy. My uncle believed that it was the fear of death, the fear of judgment, the fear of loss, the very selfish fear of personal extinction that leads to all the dangerous and destructive vices and proclivities men practice. Certainly, as there is the light of love, there is also the darkness of hatred. And for every other good and noble virtue we find a counterpoint of darkness.

We can feel no gratitude, no appreciation for the beauties and lights of our lives without the potential to suffer the other. As the volcano pours its lava into the villages below, we are assured that someday flowers will sprout in the enriched soil of that destruction. That is what separates natural violence from the violence of men. Natural violence will always result in new creation. But the horrors men put upon each other do not guarantee that from those horrors new flowers of great beauty will sprout. The Power of Creation can not be reproduced by Man.

In our family we think that it is part of man's purpose in creation to search for a balance between fate and choice. Our nature and potential is malleable. It can be chosen and altered. We live in the bubble of America while the rest of the world struggles for the basic necessities of life. To raise the standards of the world to our level we would have to speed up the harvest of these resources six times or find six new planets to plunder.

The truth is that we have created a world of fantasy which pretends that we can continue this lifestyle indefinitely while 75 percent of the rest of the world is lacking nutritious food, shelter, or a safe place to sleep. It is a myth that there are enough resources for them to raise their standards to our level, even if the entire world modeled their systems after ours.

Today, the designs of small and powerful groups of men spin out of control thrusting us away from balance and toward destruction. It is part of our purpose to attempt to divert this course, to point toward beauty and gratitude, and away from revenge and violence. But those who have chosen war and conflict will not be convinced or changed.

As my friend Clayton says they are the people of ruin, everything they touch they ruin that has become their purpose. In America, one would expect that a people experiencing such plenty would be overwhelmed with gratitude for our many blessings and overflow with compassion. For our leaders to act with attitudes of arrogance, superiority and a willingness to exercise a violent spirit can only lead to our losing those blessings. Meaningful change can be led specifically by people who demand that the moral principles of our spiritual heritages be applied without compromise to the principles of the republic. Lip service and rhetoric only increase the danger. Our foes are all the dark vices embodied in the greed and corruption of the men of power around the world.

Our hope is that gatherings of like minded neighbors will encourage a willingness to endure sacrifice for change.

This gathering is the only means in which power can be taken back into the hands of common families. We need not share exactly the same perspectives and beliefs, only agree that our goal is not to loose unnecessary and unjustified evils upon the world merely to preserve a standard of living that it will be impossible for the rest of the world ever to share.

The noise we make must be heard above negotiations, even above the bombs. I'll end with this quote:

"Goodness does not thrive in the absence of evil. Selfishness, small vices and jealousies dominate mankind in those times. True goodness only emerges in the threat and presence of Shadow -- nestling in the crook of its arm, whispering in its ear, until the Shadow goes mad and men relinquish their fears to cry once more for compassion and the creative spirit."

Thank you, James.

Very thoughtful. I am reminded of Chief Seattle's words, "the Earth does not belong to Man, Man belongs to the Earth."

the story, not having "James" ID on smurf's post, that is. But I do have a problem with one aspect of it:"indigenous people rever creation", hmmm, if only that were more consistantly true! If that really was the case then the local Indian community could be THE LEADERS in our society, as they would have the moral high ground. This is generally not the case, as a quick drive past most of the Rancherias will confirm.

I think if the Indians had their act together they could shame the rest of us into some sort of improved lifestyle, but as it is they just don't have the moral authority, as their own community is racked with crime, unemployment, broken families, environmental degradation, substance abuse and a general lack of direction and leadership.

Did you see the letter Valentino Jack (BV tribal leader) wrote to the R-B a few days ago regarding the KV name-change issue? It might as well have said "We will put ANYTHING below the need to keep our casino profitable as we can make it", are these the kind of values we should aspire to? I don't think the Indians realize that they could be the true leaders of OUR community, but they would have to clean their own house first (sometimes in the literal sense!). Bluewolf is on the right path, but he needs some back-up by his compadres before the dynamic will change, I wish him luck because they may be our only hope.

Tino Jack was still in Rod Mitchell's motel. Some other Jacks, I guess Donna. I don't know what the answer is, certainly not what the govt does and throw more money at it. The main problems are undereducation, inbreeding and low IQ.

of life at the lose of my spirit is to high a price. With all our smartness we have become fools. We belive that "Thats just the way it is." can be changed. There is a rhythm to life and without respect for all, ensuing turmoil will follow. The citizen lost by the misuse of power is a cancer it will linger and consume. Good show. MR. Bluewolf.

I believe we definitely lose sight that we are all connected. I used to have a project where I made necklaces with puzzle pieces on them (to remind people that we are all connected, like pieces of a puzzle, all part of the big picture) and when people asked me if they could buy a necklace I would say no but I will give one to you if you can give me something of value. That actually made them think about valuing something other than money. I found, what most valued in their life was something (whether it be a story or a ring or whatever) was not the thing itself but something that connected them to another person. Your post made me think about that. It made me think about how I know that one bad thing can spoil things all around it and how one good thing can hold up other good things to the light. Thank you for making me think, today.

I think, I may take up that part of my project again. Now that I have read this. http://www.apieceofmyheartproject.com

it alright - what I heard was 'we're cool with not changing the name of Kville and/or mascot. We're also cool with not helping solve a murder. Shame on anyone that will accept "quiet" regarding a name change coupled with "quiet" regarding a homicide as an acceptable situation. BVR really has the chance to help make things right, in the here and now, not make benign noises about the past. Good article JBW, but I think we passed the tipping point (environmentally) about 20 years ago. Still wonder if we ever truly possessed humanity at anytime.

does not alter the history itself. Those whom we not call, and who frequently identify themselves as "Indians" were so named by a mistake. Columbus thought he had found the East Indies, not a new world. Should we go back now and erase the word "Indian" from everything because it was wrongly applied? If so, why are the indigenous people of this continent offended by a word wrongfully applied to them? I understand why a particular people might be offended by a term that applies to them in a slang context, such as "redskin" yet isn't that team still so named in a national sports league? Isn't there still a team called the "Braves"? Where does it end? And lastly, hasn't exhaustive research shown that even our own indigenous people come not from this land, but from another? DNA testing has show native Americans, if I can use that term without offense, bear a link in geneology to Asians and even eastern Europeans from centuries long ago. Who then is truly "native"? Or all we all, at one level or another, just newcomers? Is the question who arrived here first, or who honors the earth and land more, or it is really about who is ready to accept what we have been, are now, and will become in the future? If so, why are we even discussing this upon a level any more complex than how can we move onward, toward the betterment of all? I think the time has come to put away these arguments, and move together into the now.

The purpose is not to change history, but to do away with the lies that pass for history in the dominant culture. The truth heals all things, while lies and denials create and perpetuate sickness, at the individual and national levels. The idea here is not to make people feel guilty, but to heal all concerned, and this includes healing culture and society.
Columbus did not name Indians for India. There was no India at the time, the maps read Hindustan (like Pakistan, Afganistan, etc). The term Indio (in Dio) meant "in God", because Columbus found that the Native people he encountered were so friendly, gentle, generous, and devoid of the common greed and vices of the white man that there were the closest people to God he had ever known (and therefore they would make good slaves, he reasonned).
It was not the term Indian that was offensive and more importantly very hurtful to the Pomos, but the fact that this term was lumped together with Kelseyville (Kelsey) in the mascot name. This has been said so many times by the Pomos, is anyone listening? Would a team called the Himmlerville Jews be accepted in Germany? (for those who do not know, Himmler was head of the SS in Nazi Germany).
The term redskin is a racial slur, not just slang, and the fact that it is still used for a sport team simply demonstrates blatant racism and arrogance towards Native people at a national level...Would other deshumanizing racial slurs be tolerated in sport teams' names? Native people do not have the power of the vote, being so small in numbers, so politicians could not care less, the dominant culture does not have the minimum moral fiber required to change these things by itself, and the financial power obtained from casinos is in the hands of what could be called corrupt or "go-along-to-get-along" tribal boards, who will do anything to avoid hurting gambling profits, particularly now that organized crime has moved in on some of these gambling operations. (Indian gambling is good as long as the profits are equitably shared with the people, and don't mostly go to the chairman, tribal board and their families, and as long as tribal members don't get illegaly kicked out to increase profits for some remaining tribal members, as is currently occuring all over).

About exhaustive research, the Bering Straight theory was already obsolete in the 19th century, when bones and Indian artifacts, dated to be 50 millions years old (found in 50 millions years old layers) were discovered all over California while gold was extracted. This information has been actively suppressed by the scientific community because it contradict the Darwinian theory of evolution and throws the idea of the origin of man to be in Africa out the window. When NBC aired "The mysterious origins of man" in 1996, which for the first time since the 19th century informed the public of these discoveries, it was virulently attacked by scientists who petitioned the FCC to censure the show, to force NBC to make a public apology (for telling the truth!), and to impose a substancial fine. Fortunately the FCC refused. In this instance, fundamentalist science joins fundamentalist religion in denying Native people their true origin, which is neither in Asia, Africa nor Israel but right here, on this continent. So no, Native people are not immigrants, and have every right to claim this land as their own, and to state that indo-Europeans had no business coming here since they had no intentions of respecting Native people, Native cultures and religions, and the land, the air and the water, and indeed have made a terrible mess of everything.

No one can move towards the future if they do not know were they are coming from. Study the origins and the philosophical and religious foundations of western civilization, and you will perhaps understand were we are going. American civilization did not begin with the landing of the pilgrims...like the rest of western civilization, it has its origins in the middle east (Judeo Christian) as well as in the Greek and Roman civilizations.

Speaking about moving on, the most forward thinking and influencial elements in our society, namely the scientific and religious communities, indeed have always had a desire to move on, because they are both rooted in a general dislike of the physical creation, in a belief that the physical nature and the physical earth are not worthy of the human mind and spirit. This is extremely important, it is not a futile philosophical point, as it is at the origin of the acceptance of the environmental destruction that began when civilization began.
While fundamentalist Christians long to ascend into heaven, long for the rapture and to leave what they believe is a wretched earth, scientists aim to create the necessary technologies to colonize another planet to save civilization and leave the earth when it has finally become inhabitable, or to create giant space stations in which to travel into oblivion.
Guess what? Some Native people, and some non-Native who agree with them, wish this global civilization would move on already, and soon, whether it is to go to Mars or to Heaven...A giant kick in the rear of this civilization coming from the earth would help, and I think it is indeed coming, the earth is collecting the rent and is about to teach this global civilization the meaning of responsibility!

Now for the common attacks about "the way they live", meaning the conditions on the reservations and rancherias...This is the direct result of what America, Canada, Mexico and South America are most proud of: what they calls "conquest", which was in reality the destruction of Native cultures through treacheries, diseases and policies of physical and cultural genocides. Yes, Indigenous people held the moral higher ground before Columbus. They still do, when they remember who they are and who they were, and have every right to claim to know best how to live on their own continent according to ancestral instructions that were meant to teach them balance and a sense of kinship with all life. They no longer do when they become assimilated into a western consciousness that is at best disrespectful of life, at worst hostile to life, to nature, to freedom, and produces mental and physical illnesses, addictions, environmental toxicity and degradation, endless and gobal wars, and a general state of complete ignorance of what it actually means to be a human being, to be a part of this creation.

Nobody will help him. The Christmas story is not a fable. A nwborn king is the Prince of Peace. Nations, not only "beat their swords into plowshares" but "the lion shall lie down with the lamb," as well." Peace in the animal kingdoms should especially make native Americans happy. It's time to celebrate, not moan and complain. Cheer up. Take a little sip or nip. Even a silly grin is better than a frown at Christmas time.
