Watkins: Looking for the fruits of repentance PDF Print E-mail

Holy cow! Secular Democrats are finding God. They say they are, anyway. Campaigning Hillary Clinton, shouts, “God bless you,” to cheering crowds all over Iowa. Her voice sounds like fingernails scratching on a chalk board but she does say the words. Another Democrat, Barack Obama, recently asked a church in South Carolina to make him an instrument of God and create “a Kingdom right here on Earth.” Here, on the West Coast, Republican leaders fell right out of their chairs when Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house, said she prays for President Bush every day. Apparently, God is no longer a stranger to Democrats. What’s behind the sudden conversion?

Political observers say the “conversion” isn’t a conversion. If they’re sincere, it really must be called a revival, say those who know the history of the Democratic Party. God was in the party from its very beginning (1792, when Thomas Jefferson and James Madison opposed the Federalists). They quoted the Bible in their speeches. God’s name often appeared in their letters, and sometimes even in laws. Party loyalists religiously demonstrated their faith, until fairly recently. It was only in the 1970s when faith in the Democrat Party began to fade. Until this year, it had all but disappeared.

In the 1970s Democrats began to openly support abortion clinics and homosexual marriages. That was also the time they made a strong move towards secularism and shifted a good deal further left on economic issues. Believing Democrats realized their party’s radical new politics had serious conflicts with God and the Bible. They were forced to choose between God and the party. They kept God and became Independents or switched to the Republican Party. Political scientists joke about huge traffic jams in the Bible-Belt-South caused by Democrats lined up at registrars’ offices trying to get out of the Democratic Party. Seculars were left in control. Geographically, the party moved north and west.

Secular Democrats believed God was dead or never existed and led the way to make Darwin’s theory a “scientific fact” throughout the entire country. There was a stampede to get prayer out of public schools and the Ten Commandments out of public buildings. Public school teachers were fired for suggesting intelligent design. Corporal punishment is a Bible remedy for unruly kids so Democrats campaigned, successfully in some states, to ban it. Until now, Democrats are embarrassed to mention God in their campaigns. Times are a changing, or are they?

Believing Republicans are happy to welcome Democrats back into the world of faith but will wait to see if they’re pretending. They know about such things as “fruits of repentance.” They recall former head Democrat, Bill Clinton, had trouble with the meaning of the word “is.” Conservative Christians suspect Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama may be having trouble with the meaning of the words, “God” and “Bible.” They know “God” doesn’t mean adultery, immoral homosexual marriages and the atrocities committed at sadistic abortion clinics. They also know “Bible” doesn’t mean evilution and unruly kids.

What’s more, they’ll ask recovering Democrats if God wants prayer out of public schools and the Ten Commandments out of public eyesight. God doesn’t mean Godless and church doesn’t mean secular. Bible readers will wait to see the “fruits of repentance” before they attend any election-year Democrat revival meetings with Clinton, Obama or Pelosi.

Believing Republicans are not only suspicious of election year Democrat devotion but, sorry to say, they’re beginning to be wary of their own party leaders. Somewhat comforted when President Bush kept God in his politics, they’re extremely disturbed to see Rudy Giuliani and John McCain go lukewarm on abortion and homosexual sins. They’re repulsed when they see GOP candidates promoting the same depraved ideas that caused them to leave the Democratic Party. Early Republican debates show purposeless, empty and soulless candidates, halfway converted to the secularism movement. They’re afraid this election year may show an entire country has fallen off its foundation of faith. Former Bible-Belt southern Democrats, who are now Bush Republicans, won’t know where to go next if there isn‘t a revival somewhere. A number, of course, will keep God and the Bible and may stay home on election day.

Bush Republicans know, houses that don’t have good foundations get washed away in the rain. Voting believers have already shown they won’t stay in political parties built on secular sand. They’ll wait to see if any Republican is serious about traditional American faith. They’re not totally against returning to the Democratic Party if it’s serious about renewal. They know they can’t pack up their Bibles and look for another Mayflower. There’s no place for the Mayflower to go. They may be left, like Christians in the Roman Empire; without a party, sighing, crying and vexing their souls, over the great evil men do.

One good thing about believing is believers have hope one day a Faithful Governor will come to power; one who keeps political promises. They hope that day will be soon. God is in His politics. His political party might be called the “Creationist Party” and will certainly be built on a good foundation of faith.

I think Darwin's theory is ridiculous and insulting to humanity. I am not a Christian but I agree that the design of the physical creation is extremely intelligent, more than we could ever undertsand. It is no accident, and did not originate from "chaos". It is perfectly orderly and perfectly and beautifuly balanced, and reflects greater spiritual laws.
Here is what I do not understand or do not know: I know where conservative Christians stand on abortion, homosexual marriages, prayers in school, etc etc...
But let's talk about intelligent design for a moment.
How do conservative Christians feel about such intelligent design being messed up, from within (experiments with dna, gmo's, etc) and from without (chemicals, global pollution, toxic wastes, nuclear waste, etc) by an ignorant and arrogant human species, by scientists, technocrats, politicians and industrialists who act as if they were gods?...How do they feel about us messing up the creation, the very work of the Creator? Would it make any sense at all to worship the name of an artist, sing his praises and trash his paintings? Perhaps it does not say anything in the Bible about cloning, or other Frankenstein-type experiments such as pharma crops, or the development of an ever greater number of chemicals, but rather than just pushing for the teaching of intelligent design, why aren't conservative Christians also pushing for the preservation of the intelligence and balance of this design, that is to say for the love, respect and preservation of the physical creation? Wouldn't this also be a way to show respect to the Creator? We don't even have to agree on the origin or even existence of climate change, all we all have to do is see the filthy tide of trash, of land, air and water pollution and of the expanding chemical soup that are overcoming the entire planet....rocket fuel in our drinking water, flame retardant, plastic and other chemical derivatives in the bodies of our children and in mothers' milk...our waterways polluted...mercury and other heavy metals in fish, etc, the list is endless...Where do conservative Christians stand on this horrible mess, do they throw their arms up in the air and say that it is God's will, do they think science and technology, which are responsible for much of this mess, will find a way out?...Do they care at all about this intelligent design being destroyed by people who do not even have any trace of basic common sense?
Kruk Ed Strait - Blame the Christians Author | 10-18-2007 18:54:55
No, Raphael you can't blame the Christians for pollution and war. This is a cheap and over used slur. Conservative Christians do place more importance on cleaning the inside of the cup than the dirt off the outside. There has been a lot of talk in Lake County, lately, about code enforcement, global wrming, and other pollutions of the planet, but the kids are failing in public schools and minds are filling up with hate, violence, and pornography. Faith, hope, and love are disappearing. Dirt on the inside of the cup must be washed away first.

those who spend a great deal of time naval gazing and pontificating on their version of the wonders/horrors of our universe take a little time from behind the keyboard and go volunteer in your respective communities. We will not be able to talk/write our way out of this mess. Mom always told me actions speak louder than words. I'm also pretty sure that is how grace is extended.
Kruk Ed Strait - Blonde Hair Donna Author | 10-18-2007 13:37:47
Donna must be a blonde. She probably uses white out on the computer screen. She's too dumb to know writers for these kinds of newspapers are volunteering their time. She doesn't believe the pen is mightier than the sword. She must think the whole Bible has nothing to do with writing. Sheesh!
Raphael - just so you know Author | 10-18-2007 18:00:21
Donna I do volunteer my time on issues that I choose, although very far from being retired, which I plan never to do anyway, being an artist. (My wife and I collected over 3000 signatures on a petition to save the 100 years old cypress that the Lakeport city council wanted to cut down, and we confronted the city manager and city council, and they backed down...that was a few years ago) Today I am actively volunteering my time on Pomo issues, and many environmental issues (And I never go hiking without a garbage bag to pick up the abundant trash!...) So I try to walk my talk as best as I can...and the more I "talk" , the more I will have to "walk"...and I plan to do just that. Each one of us can pick an area of interest to make the world a little better, hopefuly...My own obsessions are with the environment, and struggling indigenous cultures throughout the world...

here's Darrell's idea of what being a good Christian is: you start a war against a country that never threatened us with no means to defend itself, and inflict mass murder and ethnic cleansing on it while you attempt to steal it's only natural resource of value, you shill endlessly for the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the middle and lower class, and you condone and authorize torture whenever you feel like it. Darrell, you don't have a clue as to what a Christian is, you are a fast-disappearing bigot who's midevial mindset will not be missed when it's gone. Christ grinds his teeth every time Darrell hits the keyboard and pounds out another one of his compassionless missives, as he does every time on of those clueless republicans use his name to inflict their bigotry and intolerance on the unsuspecting. Christian-shmistian, you really have no idea what the word means.

a bigot...hmm! I have read many other dispictable descriptions of his demeanor or his writings, but a Bigot!, now that is a really low blow Darrell. If there is any truth to that one Darrell I would say you have a lot too repent for whoever you believe in..ha!ha!ha!. Only other comment I can add to that description of you Darrell is Stupidy and Ignorance is one of same and shame you can't expand your mentality spending your time trying to be a nice person rather than having a hateful attitude against people you never borthered to get to know. Just think what you have missed Darrell, but then again most of you who hate everyone who is different from yourselves missed the boat anyway. I personally don't care whether you are a christian or not to tell you the truth, just nice to see you expose yourself. At least you didn't put on your little Cone Head cap and terriorizing others and act out your sick fantacy against people who never did nothing to you.
I really feel sorry for you Darrell cause you need some professional help if you think you are superior than other people are

Smurf think DW is a bigot. Unfortunately they won't say what bigotry about whom. DW must assume they're supporting homosexual sins. This, of course, would make them good demorats who support Hilliary Clinton. They really should come out of the closet and explain what bigotry they dislike. They may discover DW admits to bigotry for the Ten Commandments and against homosexual sin.
Donna Christopher - Ten Commandments Author | 10-18-2007 18:59:06
I must assume you don't believe in them Darryl as you frequently "bear false witness" (that is lie) about me. I can take it, not worried about my soul but I worry about you Darryl. Eternity with you sounds like a good description of Hell And yes Raphael I do remember your good works saving that beautiful tree and I appreciate it. I just see folks focusing on the hereafter and the past all the while the present seems to be doing a big ol' swirly down the drain.

You've even managed to bore yourself with your happy horses**t. Its ok if you want to ignore that you have lied about me, your vengeful God is keeping track and you got some 'splainin' to do on Judgment Day. And get with it Darryl, the new snark is MEGO.

anyone who thinks that 30-odd million Americans are second class citezens simply because of their lawful sex life is a bigot darrell-period. The only people who can't see that human (or animal, for that matter), sexual oreintation is dependant on nature not some weird misinterpretation of the bible (which never mentions gays or lesbians), are people like darrell, who are so blinded by their faith in the demonstrably wrong that they can't accept the truth about the world around them no matter how much factual info they are exposed to. I don't believe in second-class human beings, and ANYONE who does is a bigot like the VERY un-Christ-like Darrell.
Kruk Ed Strait - homosexual explained Author | 10-19-2007 12:10:26
Smurf feels safe in numbers (30 million). Numbers don't make it right. Fifty million Americans probably believe in some variation of adultery. They also feel safe in numbers but they're not. Bible readers know an entire world was corrupted and destroyed in Noah's deluge because they felt safe in numbers but were not. Sodom and Gomorra were totally destroyed. They had numbers on their side. Gay and lesbians sometimes like to say they're a minority race of people. This is why they use the word bigotry. This is how they justify their sins. Smurf argues against the Bible, not DW. This is the point of the commentery. America has fallen off it's foundation of Faith. Anything goes. Sex with animals is OK. Eat, drink, and be merry, because tomorrow we die. Numbers don't make you safe. The road to life is strait and narrow and only a few find it...the road to destruction is wide open and is travelled by most people. Did Smurf ever hear those words? Where does Smurf get his/her values?
