BlueWolf: Pathology of a diseased civilization PDF Print E-mail

We could start our discussion examining controversial topics: global warming, political tyranny, religious fanaticism, etc., but there are more pressing issues at hand. The current industrial civilization considers itself an elegant experiment in progress and stability. In reality, it is a lunatic who defecates in its bed and demands the obedience of its subjects in a headlong rush toward global suicide.

Let's begin with water.

Much of the world is already experiencing a crisis obtaining potable water. Human beings are essentially animalized water. If we pour water into ourselves it immediately becomes us. It moves, it thinks, and it forgets that it is water.

98.25 percent of the world's water is saline. Of the remaining 1.75 percent, 80 percent is frozen. That means that less than one-third of 1 percent of all the drinking water in the world is available to all the life that needs fresh water to survive. No new water is being produced. Supplies are finite. Currently, human toxins and practices have poisoned a significant amount of that available water. In the U.S., 50 percent of our drinking water is from underground aquifers that are being pumped dry or poisoned from waste seepage. Those aquifers took 100,000 years to create. They cannot be replaced.

Technocrats insist that science will find a way to desalinate the oceans for our use, meanwhile local governments can't afford to fill the potholes in our streets, let alone balance the federal, state and local budgets. It's estimated that by 2015 many countries will face severe water shortages and in 50 years whole countries may be completely depopulated by the total absence of drinkable water.

How about soil?

It has taken about 100,000 years to build the world's topsoil. Due to the giant shift in agriculture and population growth over the last 5,000 years, 50 percent of the world's topsoil is gone. In 20 years, 30 percent more will have blown away. That's 80 percent of the world's arable soil, gone forever. There have been positive discoveries that could redevelop soils, but not even the slightest interest in actually paying for it.

North and South America have been devastated. Six billion tons of soil is lost per year in the U.S. A Soviet scientist once recommended that the Soviets stop the arms race because he estimated that in 100 years the U.S. could no longer grow enough food to survive. In Asia, 20 billion tons are now being lost annually. Millions of children starve to death annually in reach of this great and modern industrial civilization. Third world countries are encouraged to grow cash crops, harvest resources, or develop industrially so as to pay back their international debts rather than grow food to feed their peoples. In the face of deforestation, development, progress and lack of necessities (like water), 10,000 distinct and irreplaceable species are lost every year. The loss is permanent.

What could be a better indicator of the sanity of a civilization than its desire and commitment to protect the very resources essential to its survival?

Still not convinced?

Let's talk DNA.

The architectural elegance of DNA, the genetic material of the planet, is evidence of the vulnerable quality of creation. All of the DNA molecules of all the humans who have ever lived would fit into one teardrop. That is, 80 billion molecules in a teardrop. Everything that will happen to the future of human beings on this planet depends on the quality and protection of that teardrop.

War on Terror? Here is the real Terror!

There are 264 million tons of hazardous waste spread liberally around the U.S. each year in the form of 70,000 (mostly untested) chemicals and their by-products. To these, add 1,000 more untested chemicals each year.

DNA contains the information and intelligence at the root of an organism. It is known that chemicals can enter the body, and go straight to the cells, attaching themselves and disrupting, modifying, mutating or destroying that information and intelligence. This is damage that cannot be altered and will be part of the human species forever. Some defects can be carried, only to show up in later generations.

Serious birth defects in humans alone have doubled in the last 25 years. The worst effects are not expected to appear for another 10 to 20 years. We will spend billions to fight a war on terror yet to come, and only pennies to fight the daily poisoning of our children and the chemical threat to the DNA of our species. Sanity?

Population growth is the next issue.

Africa has 550 million people, many who lack food and water, as well as basic necessities. In one hundred years it will have 2.5 billion. What then? In hunter/gatherer societies, the ratio was three people per square mile. If we manage to protect our water and regrow our soils what can the land sustain? Endless population growth is not an acceptable formula. Which governments are committed to determining these ratios and demanding compliance?

Economic systems developed around an endless compulsion for growth are obsolete and must be abandoned immediately for systems which demand society be outfitted with artifacts that last centuries not days or months. Systems that judge their success by gross national product must be outlawed and replaced with systems that operate on renewable resources, recycle nonrenewables at 100 percent and produce no more waste than a local region can dispose of naturally.

The U.S., in order to survive, must cut production and use of resources at a minimum of 50 percent. Third world debt must be forgiven outright or traded for the establishment of wilderness systems. The present economic structures are based on a process that begins with the depletion of finite resources, proceeds to the manufacturing of disposable products which immediately begin to depreciate in value and quality, ending with their disposal as non-renewable wastes which are beyond the natural capacity of the earth to dissipate. Sanity? Common sense?

Each instant, one million new faces appear on the earth representing many species and forms. The vanity and arrogance of human beings in creating and expanding the role of potentially deadly toxins and weapons points not to a healthy society, culture, or civilization but to a scorched psyche that has become resistant and maladaptive, even sinister. Primary human bonds, which connect families and provide roles that incorporate citizens of all ages into familial relationships, have been replaced with the secondary commercial bonds of consumerism.

The new revelations of quantum science and universe cosmologies demand that those who believe in technology commit to a new understanding of the Universe as one entity inter-connected, inter-reliant and inter-related in every way. To separate humanity from this cosmology will result in a continued insanity that will bring about nothing less than the suicide of our species.

Scholars have long lamented the destruction of the library at Alexandria at the hands of barbarians who burned the manuscripts to heat their bath water because they were unable to grasp the beauty they cast into the flame.

Those who discount these warnings have only to examine themselves in a mirror to see the faces of those same barbarians.

Thank you for making strong, definitive, clear and true statments about this global pathological civilization, and adding facts and figures to back them up...I "philosopphize", and don't get my point across...without facts and figures, very little is ever understood in this pragmatic society.

This western civilization's psychosis began way before the industrial revolution...probably with the Greeks, who invented western "rationality", the mental separation of man from nature (then there was christianity and the spiritual separation of man from nature, and to top it all the Cartesian, mechanistic view of the world which created the industrial revolution)...

In order to dominate their region militarily, the Greeks deforested their islands to build an immense fleet. These islands today look as if they had been blasted by a nuclear explosion, they are piles or rocks with very little top soil and very little vegetation, but the Greek civilization dominated and flourished for a time, and that was all that was important...and while today people and scolars still marvel at the Greeks' grandiose "acheivements", the heavily forested islands of the past are gone forever, along with the flora and fauna they supported.

The latest discoveries of quantum physics do nothing more than to take us right back to the oldest cosmology...to the idea of oneness, of all life being as one, as you explain inter-related etc, which so called primitive people such as the arborigines of Australia and most indigenous people everywhere had understood thousands of years ago ( see the oldest universal symbol of a cross in the circle, of all things, all life being connected within a polarized creation).

Unfortunately our post-industrial culture has not caught up with the implications of these quantum physics "discoveries", or perhaps it has chosen to consciously reject them, because they would cause our civilization to stop what it is doing and change everything from the inside out.

I don't see this happening...What I see is that this reality of physical-spiritual oneness (meaning inter-connection, not sameness or conformity, for those who think oneness means everything being the same and walking in step, as in an "army of one") will be taught to a reluctant humanity in a paradoxal manner: through global destruction, global chaos, global death and devastation, global suffering and despair, humanity will finally understand that it is one (inter-dependant) with the earth, with all life, and one in itself.

This is the path humanity has chosen, a very hard one, but perhaps quicker, who knows, perhaps a path to relatively rapid enlightment (spiritual realization) through total paradox, as on the so called black road. It is a paradox because we will get there (to an understanding of the oneness, complementarity and harmony of the essence of all life forms) by following the ways of separation and conflict to the end, to their most extreme and destructive expressions.

At any rate there are very powerful interests that would apparently prefer to see the world we know end that to change what we are doing...some "rational" scientists are working on projects that are meant to save part of humanity from a dying world by abandoning the planet when it is no longer habitable!

They would rather do this than find a way to live in harmony with all life in a sustainable manner, but they are only attempting to achieve physically what western civilized people have longed for for centuries: to "ascend", to leave a world they seem to think they should hate as an expression of religiosity or spiritual advancement, or of "intellectual superiority", the disincarnate spirit and the pure mind thought to be superior and more worthy than the so called "gross" physical nature.
Talking about absolute madness and the pure mind, the "ideal" mind-according to the civilized view point-separated from feelings and the body, the research and development of computer "intelligence" is just that, and projected to eventually replace human intelligence, or at least control it (computer chip implants, etc, it has already began).

These are dangerous schisms (conceptual separation of heart, mind, body and spirit) that also go way back and are found mostly in patriarchal traditions (because these dichotomies facilitate the development of dominant power, of a power that is not in harmony with the creation) thoughout the middle east and as far as India, and that also form the philosophical foundation of our western civilization and our now global world view.

The greatest irony of all will be that some people, when the time comes to face the consequences of the destructive actions of our insane global civilization, will think that these tribulations are "god's punishment", or perhaps the "devil's doing", according to different beliefs, and they will not see that we all spat in the air and it's falling back on us according to very simple and predictable, and inescapable natural laws. Some will still hope for a spiritual miracle according to beliefs (the "worthy" will be "saved", the rest will go straight to "hell"), while others will keep hoping for a scientific redemption, believing science will find a way out...

I believe only those who still understand and feel in their heart the unity and oneness of the creation, and this includes the few traditional indigenous people left in the world, will keep having access to any kind of true spiritual reality and grounding, even in the midst of global destruction.

Read an article earlier this week about scientists hauling in equipment by mule to the (you'd think) middle of nowhere to test the snow pack for toxins. This is in a pristine area, you'd think untouched by human hands. Not so - it truly is a small world and the trade winds carry more than you'd would imagine. As I've frequently said for decades now, without potable water, breathable air or airable soil WE'RE SCREWED! Atlanta, suffering horrible drought in an area that goes from Kentucky to Florida, has 3 months of water left and is looking towards the Great Lakes, as is NM gov Bill Richardson. I've stated before, if you think we fight over oil, wait till we start fighting over water. The governors of Great Lake States are not receptive. As a species, we don't deserve this beautiful blue planet. If there is a Creator, it must be pissed!
Raphael - When I was Author | 10-14-2007 19:41:36
living in Canada, I had a strange feeling that at some point in the future, there would be a potential for American "refugies" to flood across the border, seeking relief from disaster...Canada is a land that is rich in water...while the US is drying, Canada will still hold one of the richest reserve of what opportunistic investors now call "blue gold", if it does not destroy its aquifers with the exploitation of its vast sand oil...
The southwest is drying, and the Hopi and Dineh Indians are loosing their centuries old springs to Big Mountain coal mine, which uses an insane amount of water to transport coal...it is not just global warming, it is global insanity. Chinese pollution falls over Canada...40% of our western waterways are polluted due to mining laws that haven't changed since the 1800's...there is not a place on this earth that has not been touched, even the middle of the ocean looks like a garbage dump...there is a giant mass of plastic bags, the size of Texas, floating on the ocean... So what is lacking? Apart from basic intelligence (you don't soil your own bed), has not Christianity, which is one of the founding block of this western civilization, encouraged a longing for the "pure spirit" and a total disreguard and even dislike for the physical creation? It is time for Christianity to wake up! Has not science, following similar foot steps, worshiped the "pure mind" (the intellect, "reason" cut off from feelings and emotions) and regarded physical nature as meaningless and inferior, something to be mastered, manipulated and changed at will? It is time for science to wake up! What is lacking is the simple, basic ability to love the earth once again. People who did in the past were called pagans and persecuted...
People who would stand for life and against this global, insane destruction are now called "radicals" by industrial interests, their political puppets and the laws and institutions they create and control.
I would say that it is this civilization that is radical, radically altering and destroying our eco system to the point of endangering all life. What could be more radical than this, who are the real "eco terrorists"? (I don't condone violence of any kind, or breaking the law, to be clear, but I would like to see the laws that allow for such destruction to be changed, and the changes to be enforced).

drought there is considered exceptional, but there are plenty of drought areas in the U.S.

time to take better care of our lake?

So all these "facts" you quote are from where? Are these "facts" from the same "scientists" who said we were going to have an Ice age by 1990 but right around that time these very SAME "scientists" started up with global warming....? Human Arrogance is correct and really take a look in that mirror.
With thinking like yours up here it's no wonder this county is going anywhere but down. Look around, you folks have it your way through out Lake county, no development, no businesses, no decent jobs (unless you work for the Gov) yep you have it your way......a pit of unemployed, poor, government dependent citizens.
Raphael - I assume, Author | 10-16-2007 01:50:30
perhaps wrongly, that you are a republican, since you are singing a republican refrain...The issues Jim brings up are however neither conservative nor liberal. Republican families' children get as sick from environmental pollution as do liberals'. A polluted water, air and land do not discriminate against who they hurt, they do not ask for your party allegiance.
Furthermore, it is a bi-partisan agenda (with the republicans at the forefront of the "new world order") that promoted free trade and globalization, encouraging manufacturing to move overseas, and it is a republican administration, a republican congress and a republican senate that gave corporations huge tax breaks specifically for moving their operations out of US soil...
Talking about having it your way, it seems to me if there are few decent jobs left, apart from those in that gigantic republican-created bureaucracy, homeland security, "you folks" (republicans and conservatives) should look at Bush and his gang, and thank them for further destroying the US economy, not to mention the deficit etc...

my post but my facts came from the folks that run Atlanta's water delivery system (and a cousin in Snellville) but you know how those liberal tree huggers in Georgia are. The joy of global climate change is no one's opinion is gonna matter one whit, nor will a forests worth of paper with studies on it. We are crapping where we eat on a global scale. Pretty sure that is not a good thing.

and share that with my cousin and his family when the water runs out lcsage. I'll just tell them it must be a flashback from the '60s and they are only imagining their drought. Anyway, I hope you and Hillary have a good time reliving Woodstock, still got your groovy beads lcsage?
