UPDATE: CHP confirms death of Lakeport teen PDF Print E-mail

SONOMA COUNTY – A 19-year-old Lakeport resident who was involved in a four-vehicle collision that killed a family of four Saturday night has died.

Steven Culbertson died late Sunday morning at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, according to Officer Jon Sloat of the California Highway Patrol's Santa Rosa office.

Katy Hillenmeyer, a Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital spokesperson, told Lake County News late Monday that Culbertson died “surrounded by loved ones.” Under privacy laws Hillenmeyer was not authorized to give further details.

The young man's death followed by several hours the deaths of John Maloney, 45, his wife Susan, 42, and their young children Grace, 5, and Aiden, 8, whose Nissan Quest was hit broadside by Culbertson at around 9:20 p.m. Saturday.

Based on its initial investigation, the CHP determined that Culberton allegedly was driving his Mini Cooper more than 90 miles per hour southbound on Lakeville Highway when he clipped the rear end of a Honda CR-V driven by Petaluma resident John Graham, 61.

Culbertson's vehicle continued on, running a red light and hitting the Maloneys' Quest, which was traveling eastbound on Highway 37. The Quest was then pushed into an eastbound traveling Mitsubishi Galant driven by 52-year-old Carrie Rodriguez of Novato.

Rodriguez and her passengers, Liberty Rosario, 42, of Fairfield and Adelaida Nicholas, 53, of Novato, were transported to a Novato hospital with minor injuries, said Sloat. Graham and his passenger, Stockton resident James Parker, weren't hurt.

There had been differing reports over the weekend regarding Culbertson's death.

Sloat said the CHP received a call from the Sonoma County Coroner's Office reporting that Culbertson died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.

However, several hours later Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital officials continued to report to Lake County News and other media that Culbertson was in care and in critical condition.

The CHP – which spent hours investigating the scene with the help of the agency's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) – said speed was a factor in the crash.

Sloat said that Culbertson was not being pursued by any law enforcement at the time of the collision.

There was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene, said Sloat.

However, he added, “We're not ruling it out yet.”

A blood sample was taken from Culbertson and submitted to the Department of Justice laboratory. Sloat said it should take about two weeks for those tests to be completed.

Two years ago, a family of five was killed in a fiery crash on Highway 101, said Sloat. That and Saturday's crash are the two worst in his 10 years working in the Sonoma County area, he said.

Culbertson graduated from high school in 2008 and aspired to be a professional race car driver and mechanic, according to his Facebook page.

Yeah you are right, My family could be next, anyone's family could be.. Hey guess what, you or a family member of yours could be next to make a Bad decision and cause a tragedy like this one. I'm not defending him, I am saying he made a horrible mistake that he don't have to live with, his family does.. try having compassion for his family, they lost a loved one just like the ones he killed.
Shame on You!!!

Somewhere in your life someone meant something to you and they didn't make a right choice.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.
God take his young soul in your heavenly arms. Please be kind to his poor family left behind without their child.

Someone had to bring God into this. Again, a wrong choice IS NOT going 90+ in a residential or congested area, it's stupidity. Punk gone...end of story.

Culbertson was involved in a crash in Lake County on June 1, 2007, according to records with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Because he was a juvenile at the time, the CHP declined Monday to give details of the accident.

About 45 days after the crash, the DMV suspended Culbertson's license for a year because of a drunken driving incident, details of which were unavailable. The yearlong suspension is standard for a first-time offender who is below the legal drinking age.

I've seen his other posts. Just as lame as this one.
Anybody know about this...

"The intersection of Highway 37 and Lakeville Highway, where drivers are forced to go from highway speeds to a stop, has been the site of 27 other crashes since 2007," the CHP said.
I remember driving crazy as a teen. I got away with it. I survived and never killed anyone. I was just lucky.
This mean spirited self righteous rant I am hearing from fubar and others is uncalled for.

Such a tragedy!

So sad to hear the family of four lost their lives due to the destructive behavior of a young man evidently careless when it comes to driving a motor vehicle. I heard on the news the day of the accident the family was only a few miles from returning home after spending Thanksgiving in Hawaii. As for fubarbrothersband's remarks.... it's understandable to have such an opinion, but to express that opinion on the world wide web is just plain wrong. Sometimes opinions are best kept to yourself, especially when the facts about the incident have not been revealed.
HOLY S**T!!!

you are a bunch of cold black hearted A**HOLES!!! EVERY one is involved in at least 1 wreck in their life time whether they get killed or some one else does. the CHP says no alcohol or drugs were involved so something else was wrong. this kid did have medical problems. my brother died of cancer in 2008 and he was only 23 so what am i supposed to do blame the hospital because they didnt cure it? NO, no one will ever ever know the true reason to this wreck same as me and my family will never know why my brother was choses as a cancer victim. grow up you old farts and pray for the Culbertson and Maloney family's and live your life. I bet if your son daughter or grandkids were in Stevens situation you wouldnt be saying all these cold hearted things about them would you. no you wouldnt.
kid had a record
written by norcalgal, December 01, 2009
I thought if you got a DUI as a minor your liscence is taken away until you are 21? Whoever let this kid get it back, big mistake! I feel bad for the families but I'm glad this wreckless driver is off the road, for good. My heart goes out to the Maloneys, especially since some lowlife scumbags ransacked their house and stole their car last night. Pieces of sh*t
cold hearted
written by sira, December 01, 2009
Who is being cold hearted? How about those who are so cold about 4 counts of vehicular manslaughter that they are equally sympathetic to the death of the CRIMINAL as the victims? It is a shame he didn't survive to stand trial and serve a long time in prison, but then he saved society a whole lot of money by killing himself along with the Maloneys.
If the father owned the car and or had it on his car insurance he is liable for damages, irregardless of his son's age.

Unfortunately it cost 4 lives to get this kid off the road for good. What a waste.
Magnum needs to keep his hateful comments to himself
written by How Dare U, December 02, 2009
I cannot believe how evil and disgraceful your comments are regarding Steven's death.
I cannot even imagine the grief that all of Steven's family and friends are trying to cope with and you want to add more to it.
You had better watch your own ”back” because I know if I was involved I would look forward to making your life a living hell (and that is just for starters.)
Many scenarios might be the reason for this tragedy, such as the floor mat could have been stuck under the accelerator or maybe he suffered from a health issue rendering him unconscious. Therefore, until the investigation is complete nobody should be assuming it was Steven’s fault..
There is a reason for our laws in this country and being “innocent until proven guilty” is still one of them.
You are evil to say such hateful things and may you rot in hell for being such a bad person.
I think the police should check and see if you have been seen cruising in a silver 350Z which was one of the items stolen from the now deceased Maloney’s home that was burglarized yesterday.
Now that (and I am only speculating) would be just your style… .

Ditto that - How Dare U

Couldn't have said it better myself - I am praying that KARMA kicks fubar in his ass for saying such hateful comments along with all of you who do not have any compassion for all of the families and friends that are hurting from this tragedy.
W-O-W

Do some of these people that comment even think before they speak!? (Fubar) Your ignorance is truly amazing and you are fortunate that this type of forum provides you with the anonymity that it does as I am sure you lack the backbone to say these things directly to peoples faces. All these negetive sadistic comments that are being made make me sick. How many people that have posted here actually know the Culbertsons?? or know the Maloney's?!?! This is a tragity on both sides and if you cant see that then you are seriously lacking in the humanity department -FUBAR!. I know the Culbertson's and they are Good and Decient people that would not wish this tragity on ANYONE and no Steven was not a "richie rich kid" as you so ignorantly stated> He was just a kid- someones brother - someones son! Stop being a 2 bit forum troll fubar and do something constructive! The Maloney's and Culbertson's are going through an unimaginable time and reguardless of whos fault it is as a human being I can pray that those that have gone be recieved with open arms in heaven and those that remain find a way to get through this.

As for Fubar I leave you with this advise: Read Mathew 7 and take it to heart!
WOW

Its horrible that some of you are casting judement on such a terrible ACCIDENT!!!! Shame on all of you saying nasty hurtful things!!! My heart gos out to the Culbertsons and the Maloneys. Steven was a good hearted person. My famiy and I have known him since he was a little boy and he was a good friend. He will be greatly missed! He was someones son and brother and friend. Its terrible to read such hateful comments. This could have happened to anyone. I cant believe that some of you are blogging such terrible words and hiding behind a screen name. Would you still say these terrible things if we all knew who you were. And all I can say to Fubar is KARMA!!!!!!
Fubarbrothers band will write a song about this
written by fubarbrothersband, December 02, 2009
We will play it at our next gig and dedicate to all of you Christian bottom feeders.
When and Where...
written by How Dare U, December 03, 2009
I am sure if you play like you talk it would be the kinda noise I would prefer not to hear.
I would also be concerned for anyone else to hear this sort of thing because ~ Heaven Forbid ~ someone listens to the songs and plays them backwards they could have some subliminal message that could result in adverse effects on the innocence of our children.
Oh and FYI innocent is not a word I would use to describe you.
