Lehne: Thanks to those who supported Blue Heron Rally PDF Print E-mail
Written by Georgina Lehne
Monday, 10 September 2007

The Lake County Community Action Agency wishes to thank those great people who supported our Blue Heron Run. The community of Lake County came together to make the most of another beautiful day.

There are many to thank. From those generous folks who bought tickets, those who labored to sell tickets and put the event together, the many vendors who gave so much, and the many who labored at the event to make the Pancake breakfast and barbecue happen.

The Fryed Brothers Band make our feet move and gave us a smile after a busy day.

Thanks to the following who gave so much to benefit our Youth Club: Joyce Overton, who gave so much of her time and talent and chaired the event; and to our sponsors, Conrad Hydroponics, Dick Michaels Insurance, Clearlake Veterinary, Airport Auto Brokers, Marvin Carpenters Insurance Services, City of Clearlake, Foods Etc., Lakeshore Lions, Holistic Solutions, Wal-Mart, Computer Geeks, Epidemic Construction Inc., Buckhorn, Perfect T’s, Clearlake Kiwanis, The Iron Doctors and Ironhorse Creations.

Georgina Lehne is executive director of Lake County Community Action Agency. The Aug. 18 Blue Heron Rally was a fundraiser to benefit the organization.

Henderson: The cause was speed PDF Print E-mail
Written by James Henderson
Sunday, 09 September 2007

The letter of Mr. Kevin Engle left me with the afterthought, "Speed" (Engle: Accidents do happen, and new standards are needed). The near miss was because of less speed.

There seems to be blame all around, so to blame one and not the other is the problem for me.

Denny: Lakeport Council should consider benefits of universal health care PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lou Denny
Friday, 07 September 2007

This comprises an open letter to urge the Council of the City of Lakeport to conduct a simple cost analysis of the impacts and probable savings of implementing statewide universal health care to City of Lakeport taxpayers.

In June of this year, the Lake County Administrative Office analyzed the cost to the county of the proposed California Universal Health Care Act, Senate Bill 840. Their analysis concluded that the County would save 52 percent or $1,663,824.00 per year in health care costs with the SB 840 single-payer plan. Based on this analysis, the Lake County Board of Supervisors endorsed SB 840 and communicated their endorsement to our state legislators and the governor.

I am recommending that the Lakeport City Council conduct a similar analysis that compares the city’s costs of health insurance for city employees of SB 840 with the current private insurance company financed system now in place. I also urge the Lakeport City Council to endorse SB 840 and communicate that endorsement and the analysis to our state legislators and the governor.

In my career work in health and human services, I encounter daily, innumerable individuals and families with insufficient health care coverage. The “working poor” would benefit from expanded coverage for themselves and their children. The aging population would realize a greater quality of life. The most vulnerable among us would be helped immeasurably.

Hassler: Goodbye, Lake County PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Hassler
Thursday, 06 September 2007

Thank you for your June 8, 2007 story regarding the boating accident involving Deputy Sheriff Perdock.

As a power boat and sail boat owner, as well as one who has owned property and spent many a summer's day on Clear Lake, I have been following this story for many months. I am so disgusted with the district attorney's failure to file charges against Deputy Sheriff Perdock, and let a jury sort it out, that I no longer have interest in visiting Clear Lake. How can I feel safe in such an environment?

As unfortunate as it is for the folks of Clear Lake, they will likely not be seeing any more of my spending dollars and having discussed this with other boaters, I know I am not alone. Goodbye, Clear Lake, I'll miss you!

John Hassler lives in Novato.

Harris: Local straw poll finds for Clinton PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wanda Harris
Monday, 03 September 2007

Forget those scientific polls you keep hearing and reading about ... Lake County Democrats conducted our own straw poll at our fair booth over the Labor Day weekend.

We had many responses and a lot of enthusiasm expressed for the presidential candidates; 131 people participated in the straw poll.

As with national scientific polling, Hillary Clinton takes the lead in this wholly unscientific survey.

Democrats have a supremely talented and qualified array of candidates to choose from for the 2008 presidential election.

As Democrats here in Lake County and nationwide work hard for their own candidate during the primary season, we are committed to coming together next year and supporting wholeheartedly the winner of the primaries.

America knows that putting a Democrat in the White House in 2008 is our country's best hope.

If you did not get a chance to participate, look for our ballot box at the DEMOCRATIC booth at the Kelseyville Pear Festival on Sept. 29.

We want to thank all of our booth volunteers and the supporters we visited with over the Labor Day weekend.

It is a pleasure to be at the fair and we are proud to be a regular participant.

We know that the staff and directors work tirelessly to put on the best fair in the state!

Wanda Harris is chair of Lake County's Democratic Central Committee.
