Church offers to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies |

LAKE COUNTY – The Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County (UUCLC) has announced it will perform marriage ceremonies involving same-sex couples. "Our faith has always welcomed people with diverse beliefs and striven for social justice for all people," says Carol Cole-Lewis, president of the community, "We are an open and affirming community and support same-sex marriages and their families." The Unitarian Universalist Association's Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Concerns (UUA OBGLTC) works to foster acceptance, inclusion, understanding and equity for bisexual, gay, lesbian and/or transgender persons of all colors, races, and ethnicities, both within the UUA and in society at large. In addition, Interweave, a membership organization affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, is dedicated to the spiritual, political, and social well-being of Unitarian Universalists who are confronting oppression as lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender persons and their heterosexual allies; and facilitates the celebration of the culture and lives of its members. The Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry, based in Sacramento, has been at the fore-front of the recent movement to win equal rights for same-sex marriage. LAKEPORT – Father Leo Joseph, OSF, will preach on the Feast of Corpus Christi Sunday, May 25, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1190 N. Forbes St., Lakeport. Holy Eucharist also will be offered at the 9:30 a.m. services. Father Joseph is the guardian of the Little Portion Hermitage on Highway 175 near Cobb. Refreshments will be served during fellowship in the parish hall following services. Evening prayer is celebrated each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Healing services are offered the first Sunday of each month. Please call 263-4785 for more information. Consecrated in 1899, the church is a memorial for 5-year-old John Pierre Collier, son of Captain William and Mary Blackwood Collier. Young John Pierre perished in a fire at Clear Lake in 1896. The church is known throughout the community for its food closet and thrift store outreach. MIDDLETOWN – Sunday, May 18 marks the fourth session of “Spirituality and Money” at the Middletown Community United Methodist Church. The session begins at 4 p.m. This week the facilitator will focus the discussion on the question, What are we asking when we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread?” Each person will be offered the opportunity to discern what their basic daily needs truly are, compared to what society may be calling us to acquire. Participants will examine the ways that God may already be providing for their needs. The public is invited to attend this free event. Immediately following workshop at 5 p.m. will be the second of bi-monthly Episcopal evening prayer services. This service will feature the Rev. Peggy Thompson who will preach on, Genesis 1:1-2:4a. Her sermon title is “Evolution or Creation: What does it matter?” These programs are held at the Middletown Community United Methodist Church, 15833 Armstrong in Middletown. MIDDLETOWN – Wanda Celli has been appointed interim pastor to the Middletown Community United Methodist Church effective July 1, announced Rev. Dr. Ben Silva-Netto, Shasta District superintendent. As part of her pastoral assignment, Celli, a resident of the Lower Lake area, will provide pastoral care, conduct membership classes, community outreach, member development, on the first Sunday serve communion and coordinate a summer children’s program. Methodist Elder Denis Eucalyptus of Lower Lake Methodist Church will provide supervision during her term in Middletown. “The administration of the church will continue to be directed by the church council and church committees,” Silva-Netto told the Pastor Parish Relations Committee and church council at a special meeting on May 5. “We are excited to be the first church Wanda will serve as pastor to fulfill her calling,” said Voris Brumfield, Church Council chair. Episcopal Deacon Peggy Thompson, Rev. Timothy Locke and Linda Diehl-Darmes have been Sunday speakers during the last six months and will continue to offer motivational messages as part of the last three Sundays each month, said Brumfield. Additionally, special dramatic presentations and quarterly ‘All Singing Sunday’ will provide variety in the Sunday Worship services. “We have a small, dedicated congregation which recognizes the need to be of service to the community with our facilities and programs which support the needs of young families and older adults who are experiencing the challenges of life,” Brumfield said. In August 2007, Celli became the Middletown church musician while also attending seminary and working for her husband, Ken. In November 2007, with the transfer of Pastor John Song, Celli's responsibilities expanded to include pastoral care. Pastor Celli will be the speaker at the 10 a.m. Sunday service on May 18. Community center groundbreaking is Thursday |

CLEARLAKE OAKS – Following years of planning, Clearlake Oaks Community United Methodist Church will celebrate a groundbreaking for its new community center this week. The Rev. Dr. Rick Schlosser, the church's senior pastor, reported that the church has received the final permit for its new Thornton-Canady Community Center to be built on The Plaza next to the church's preschool. Work has just started, but the church is planning to hold an "official" groundbreaking ceremony at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20. Schlosser said the community is invited to come celebrate and join them for the festivities.
