LAKEPORT – More than 300 people gathered on Friday, July 17, for the inaugural Jonas Energy Solutions Solar Car Race at Clear Lake High School. The race was a highlight of this year’s summer science and algebra academies, which are offered by the Lake County College-Going Initiative and local school districts. More than 150 students from Middletown Middle, Mt. Vista Middle, Terrace Middle, Clear Lake High, Lower Lake High and Middletown High worked in teams to create a small car powered by a solar panel. Sixty-one cars competed for cash prizes, and 100 adults, volunteers, educators, and community members came to cheer them on in the 105-degree heat. Other activities at the event included solar telescopes from Taylor Observatory and the Ukiah Astronomical Society, popsicles from MendoLake Credit Union, giveaways from United Way and live music from String Theory, a rock band from Middletown High School. The double-elimination race started at 10 a.m. and by 1:30 p.m the competition was just as hot as the 105-degree day.
