Lake County International Charter School jumps 19 points on STAR Test PDF Print E-mail

MIDDLETOWN – Lake County International Charter School (LCICS), for the second year in a row, increased its Standardized Testing and Reporting scores (STAR), raising the school’s overall score 19 points from 720 to 739.


Director Karl Reichman said, “Last year’s growth of 17 points was an incredible achievement, and to be able to exceed that this year is exciting proof that our programs are truly working! This is just one measure of our students’ successes, but is one that our students and our teachers can be very proud of.”


Lake County International Charter School (LCICS) is a tuition-free, K-8th grade public, school that is WASC accredited and an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World school providing students with an inquiry-based, enriched education in a nurturing environment.

Lake County Historical Society awards scholarships to high school graduates PDF Print E-mail

LAKE COUNTY – The Lake County Historical Society has awarded two $500 scholarships to local high school graduates.


Ashley M. Perry, Clear Lake High School, has received a $500 scholarship and will attend Brigham Young University this fall.


She plans to obtain a bachelor of arts degree in international relations and possibly go on to attend law school.


William J. Phelps, Middletown High School, has received a $500 scholarship and will attend California State University at Long Beach this fall.


He plans to obtain a bachelor of science degree in microbiology and possibly continue on to medical school.


Application for the historical society's scholarships is open to all graduating Lake County high school students who will be enrolling in a college or vocational school.


The student must carry at least 12 units, have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, and be active in school and community activities.


A 250- to 750-word essay on Lake County history is required. The essay may be published in the Historical Society’s Pomo Bulletin.

NAPA VALLEY – Napa Valley College’s credit Hospitality and Tourism Management Program offers classes on hospitality management, hotel administration and food, beverage and restaurant management this fall.


Fall classes start Aug. 17. Students are encouraged to register early.


The local hospitality industry is struggling to find qualified employees and industry leaders desire to improve customer experiences while visiting the Napa Valley, said instructor Ian MacNeil.


The three courses offered are: Introduction to Hospitality Management (HOSP 120) held on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.; Principles of Hotel Administration (HOSP 122) held on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.; and Food, Beverage and Restaurant Management held Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.


Each of these courses will improve the student’s awareness of customer service and provide a firm foundation for career growth in hospitality management.


Instructor Ian MacNeil, who has nearly 20 years of wine-hospitality business experience, is program coordinator.


In addition to those thinking about going into the hospitality field, the classes are very useful for individuals already working in the industry who are interested in career development, MacNeil said.


The classes are offered in the evening for the convenience of those who are currently employed.

LAKE COUNTY – Four $500 scholarships are available to Mendocino Community College students who are currently enrolled in school.


The minimum requirements for application are that students must be a Lake County resident, have accumulated at least six hours at Mendocino College, have a 3.0 grade point average or above and are currently enrolled at the school.


Previous applicants through the Mendocino College financial aid department are encouraged to apply.

 

The application may be found on the Kiwanis Website, www.kiwanislakeport.org , and sent to the scholarship committee at the address listed on the Web site.


The cutoff date for application is Aug. 7, in time for evaluation, selection and use when the new school year begins August 17.

 

This $2,000 offering is in addition to the $3,700 already pledged to several graduating high school seniors in Lake County this spring.


The Kiwanis of Lakeport take pride in their commitment to the youth of Lake County and demonstrate this by actively supporting higher education opportunities.

LAKEPORT – More than 300 people gathered on Friday, July 17, for the inaugural Jonas Energy Solutions Solar Car Race at Clear Lake High School.


The race was a highlight of this year’s summer science and algebra academies, which are offered by the Lake County College-Going Initiative and local school districts.


More than 150 students from Middletown Middle, Mt. Vista Middle, Terrace Middle, Clear Lake High, Lower Lake High and Middletown High worked in teams to create a small car powered by a solar panel.


Sixty-one cars competed for cash prizes, and 100 adults,volunteers, educators, and community members came to cheer them on in the 105-degree heat.


Other activities at the event included solar telescopes from Taylor Observatory and the Ukiah Astronomical Society, popsicles from MendoLake Credit Union, giveaways from United Way and live music from String Theory, a rock band from Middletown High School.


The double-elimination race started at 10 a.m. and by 1:30 p.m the competition was just as hot as the 105-degree day.


The eight fastest cars competed in a final heat, and coming in first place was car No. 25, “Team HA SB” from Lower Lake High: Harry Zhang & Alex Toshich.


The second place winner was Car No. 44, “The Misfits” from Middletown High: Will Ahola, Leevy Johnston and Kastina Riccio.


Third place went to Car No. 1, the “Batmobile” from Clear Lake High: Cristian White and Brandon Disney.


Fourth place went to Car N0. 8, “Team Joica” from Terrace Middle School: Caylee Schultz, Sarah Landrum and Rebecca Bisaccio.


The following cash prizes were provided by Jonas Energy Solutions of Lower Lake: first place, $100 for each team member; second place, $50 for each team member; and third place, $15 for each team member. Fourth place received a solar fan donated by Real Goods.


Teams from each school also will be awarded Jonas Energy Solutions “green” goodie bags featuring canvas bags, water bottles and pens. All winners were given certificates from the Solar Living Institute.


Emily Hebert, Deardhra McGeough-Prendergast and Mariana Trujillo, owners of Car No. 46, “The Beast” from Middletown Middle, won the Student Choice Award for the “coolest” looking car, which included a certificate and $5 per team member.


High school students will receive one unit of college credit from Merritt Community College for building the solar cars.
