Veterans invited to Wild About Books for reunion Nov. 10 PDF Print E-mail

CLEARLAKE – Veterans of all wars are invited to a free reception at Wild About Books in Clearlake to visit with author Frank Taylor.

The event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10.

A noted author, film maker and Marine Corps historian, Taylor has written and published several books about World War II and made PBS movies about the conflicts on the Pacific, is anxious to meet local veterans and hear their stories of service.

Taylor will discuss his nonfiction books written together with veterans of the fighting Pacific by Marines and share insights on how to use self-publishing to record lifetime memories and events.

His latest book, “Iwo Jima: Red Blood, Black Sand,” written by Pfc. Charles W. Tatum, contains the first person account of a young man’s passage from teenager to an adult during the battle of Iwo Jima.

Illustrated with hundreds of photos, it has become a WWII classic, which has been praised by two Commandants of the Marine Corps, best-selling author Stephen Ambrose, and many others. Taylor edited and designed the volume and in connection with his partner has sold more than 5,000 copies since its release in 1995.

The second book written with Marine Corps veteran Jim Moore is an account of the Pacific campaign against the Japanese Imperial Army starting at Guadalcanal on Aug. 7, 1942 and continuing through the bloody fights for the Russell Islands, then the Post War years on Alaskan military bases. “Over My Shoulder: Metamorphosis of Innocence” is a stark account of the brutal fighting that led to the conquest of the Pacific and defeat of Japan from 1942-45.

The twin books, plus DVD documentaries will be on sale. Refreshments will be served. No reservations are necessary and this event is free.

Wild About Books is located at 14290 Olympic Drive, Clearlake. Call 707-994-9453 for details.
