The state of heath of our Local government - 2007/06/27 04:31
What would you say the health of our local government is? I am under the impression that things are not all that well within those offices lining the hollow halls of our government building.
I would say the exam needs to start at the top. I get the distinct impression that the current Lake County Board of Supervisors less Supervisor Rushing - District 3 has lost sight of who the employee is and who the employer is.
While District 4 Supervisor Farrington may not be as entrenched as is District 1 Supervisor Ed Robey, District 2 Supervisor Jeff Smith and District 5 Supervisor Rob Brown are; I believe Supervisor Farrington is fast losing sight that his job is to defend and protect; not to trade off for the betterment of mankind; the ends do not always justify the means.
Supervisor Farrington would be smart to align himself with Supervisor Rushing as I believe the remaining trio may not have as long a life in government service as they had hoped for.
For any who would like to view the triteness that this trio including Supervisor Farrington on occasion; treat the public. See them in action on Tuesday’s; and a rebroadcast the following Sunday courtesy of Lake County Community Television Channel 8; a real public service (if you are using Mediacom).
All those elected to public office of late it seems; have lost sight that a transparent government is the best government. Yes Sheriff Mitchell and District Attorney Jon E. Hopkins I would say even your offices have lost sight of what it is you have been elected to do. There seems to be this mentality of them and us; when in fact you were elected to protect everyone’s rights. Secrecy will be the undoing of us all; covering up is nothing more than a cancer that one may not recover from.
I remind you; public office is something one seeks; not a task forced upon you. As elected officials your jobs are to lead; not complain.
The elected official and those seeking office view the electorate (the voter) as shortsighted with equally short memories. The arrogant attitude in which former District 3 Supervisor Gary Lewis dealt with the Cell Phone issue was in part his undoing along with how he handled the flooding of Upper Lake with a private meeting; are just two prime examples.
Understanding local government is not an easy task; but a task that each of us had better be willing to undertake; lest we lose it. While being an elected official does not necessarily mean you become a public whipping boy; it does mean “the buck stops with you”.
I say to you the Lake County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Mitchell and District Attorney Jon E. Hopkins there is a cancer growing within this local government with far reaching implications. Your subordinate’s may not be getting the message; since you as elected officials have lost sight of the fact that a transparent government is the best government; and have adopted the “them vs. us mentality”. The North Carolina District Attorney Michael Nifong prosecutor involved in the Duke lacrosse rape case is another prime example of what happens to ones career; and the list goes on forever; Bill Clinton; Richard Nixon. I remind you local elected officals; that not one of you garner the kind of support or loylty from your subordinate’s that these men have enjoyed; you better figure out real soon just whose side you’re on and how you can do away with this “them vs. us mentality”.
