"Heroes'"??? We were dumb for following orders. Heroes' for invading and occupying Vietnam? "Thank you for your service!" is more then enough for most of us who believed the lie when we either enlisted or were drafted. And, there would be a lot less of us if it were not for that draft that forced conscription and death for tens of thousands. I'm a hero for learning how to do a field abortion on a "gook women"???? Gimme a break! Better I should have shot the DI who taught that skill!
Heroes? Try invaders! The mightiest nation in the world bombed one of the poorest almost to the stone age! Then they kicked our asses back across the Pacific.
You want to "thank us?" Fund VA programs! Nurture a nation that does not need to make tens of thousands of new veterans every generation! Help create the conditions where war can not be an answer and our kids are taught peace and not kill. Get us coverage for the birth defects of our grand kids due to our exposure to Agent Orange. Heroes would help Vietnam rid it's contaminated soil of dioxins from Agent Orange! Heroes would be in the streets demanding their children's immediate return from Iraq and Afghanistan.
I've too many friends who have bombed or shot kids, women, old people in Vietnam. They are not your heroes either! And, we don't want your pity! We want recognition and not as heroes!
No Heroes' Welcome will undue mistakes or deceit by way of LBJ or Nixon and a VA that could give a damn less!
