Re:City gives final approval to underage drinking ordinance - 2007/08/08 01:20
I love the argument, if you "are old enough to DIE FOR THEIR COUNTRY, they should be old enough to have a drink..." as it use to be my justification for arguing the pro side of alcohol when I was younger. My view and role is now reversed.
The big problem is our youth are not drinking to be social; they are binge drinking and at a much higher rate then their adult counterparts. According to the OJJDP, frequent binge drinkers in the 18-20 y.o. age group drink 96% of the alcohol for that group. Accompany that thought with the knowledge/data we now have about the affects of alcohol on the stages of brain development (which it is now believed that the brain develops well into your mid 20’s) and the costs of underage drinking in our society ($61.9 BILLION per year: PIRE 2004) doesn’t allow the option to think our kids know when to say when…they don’t and we all are paying for it.
Clearlake is trying to focus their efforts on actions that will produce the outcomes their community wants. The number one way to do this is to keep alcohol out of the hands of their minors…which is what this ordinance is meant to do.
