There may be valid reasons for this behavior:
Consider that many of these hicks also wear tank tops or no shirt at all, therefore the hat provides a place to store their generic cigarette pack since it cannot be rolled into the sleeve of the tee shirt.
Possibly they are trying to spare us the sight of their balding head and/or warts or other growths.
They may also be concealing some small furry pet that otherwise would not be allowed in restaurants, not everyone has the same definition of service animal.
As for the backward hat wearing doofi, these misunderstood people suffer from a condition not yet recognized by the medical profession. Namely Brimphobia, a debilitating condition that would otherwise prevent them from wearing a hat. Bob Montana creator of Archie & Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones III recognized this as early as 1941 when he drew Jughead wearing a beanie, really a standard felt hat that had been trimmed and turned up to accommodate those with Brimphobia.
Hope this clears things up a bit, since I moved to Clearlake seven years ago I have been studying the habits of it’s indigenous peoples. Perhaps some day I’ll write a book, alas no one would believe it.
