Jim, One side of may family has native Americans in it that were here when the Europeans arrived, and they couldn't unite with other tribes, long enough to defeat a handful of people, that would have perished without native help. The problem? Greed! Is it different today? No! Look at the tribal enrollment issue that is going on in so many tribes over casino money.
The other side of my family is first generation Americans from Austria, One member of that family stood trial at Neurenburg. I truly don't know which side of the family I am more ashamed of.

I voted for Obama

but I was never under the delusion that Obama is a black man. He is the son of an African exchange student and a white girl from Oklahoma or Nebraska. He didn't grow up in the ghetto, although that's where he went to start his career in politics. I heard a sound bite yesterday that he said his own grandmother could have benefitted from a better health plan. What about his and his wife's millions? Do you mean to tell me he let the taxpayers of Hawaii foot the bill? That statement has some very interesting implications and I won't comment on it until I read the entire story. - dogwalker

Another fine essay

James, you just articulated brilliantly what I've been thinking piecemeal for years. A few years ago I worked part time as a tutor for Native American Education at the middle and high schools. In a staff meeting, we discussed the fact that the Native American Education Center offered no medical insurance. The employees who were Native could utilize Tribal Health, but there were no benefits for the several white employees. Now I am not "all white" but I pass, okay. Someone suggested that I try to use this little tiny microscopic bit of unverified Native American blood to claim benefits. Besides being impractical and somewhat sleazy, this idea struck me terribly funny! Someone from the "dominant culture" posing as a Native American in order to get medical benefits! Whoa, something is upside down in this picture! Maybe the so-called dominant culture isn't so dominant anymore. The empire is crumbling...

... and by the way, where is Rove these days? Up to no good, I'll be bound, and hardly in retirement as the quiet pater familias. Great treatise, James. - SandraWade

who is 'the older generation'?!

So now can we add ageism to the racism? Good Lord, what's so wrong with starting again from scratch? All the millions working for HMO's and the unprincipled ins. co's can join those who already know what it's like to be suddenly out of work. Then let them get creative and apply for health-connected jobs for the good of all the people, not just those who pay premiums and don't squawk when they still have to pay extra or go without. Forbidding ins. co's to refuse coverage for prior conditions will still allow them to set high premiums for those conditions. Why don't people realize that a truly social policy is NOT THE SAME AS NATIONAL SOCIALISM (Nazi, which was in fact Fascism). By the way, the word fascism, I hear, is not in the new USA dictionaries - since its definition too closely resembles what this country has been experiencing for a while. - SandraWade

but the pendulum is merely swinging. Remember, Obama wouldn't be President if it wasn't for "White America." Besides, even McCain's daughter thinks Joe the Plumber is a donkey's bottom. I don't think Obama has done enough for the Native American population to be Pied Piping for him yet. Currently, Indians are disenrolling eachother in record and unprecedented numbers. Believe it or not, many members of "White America" are helping with that by boycotting the casino owning tribes that are committing genocide upon their own. The pendulum swings.
Racial divide coming from the mouths of Democrats.

Why do democrats always bring up race? Is race that much of an issue that the pot of racial hatred must always be stirred?

Why did you acomplish other then get responses from like race baiters in support of your race hating agenda?

You Democrats use people like MLK as your standard bearer and then turn around and use talking points of Loius Farrakan to represent who you really are.

No wonder the country is dividing, rascist spewing democrats vs normal everyday americans wishing they could just live their lives in peace. - bearer

link Grace. I am dealing with this situation with many friends right now. They are flipping out to put it frankly. The lighter the hair color, the lighter the eye color - the greater the flip out factor. Trying to discuss things is to no avail. By golly they heard it on O'Reilly or Beck or Rush et al so it has to be true. Attempts at clarification or education are rebuffed. Heck, I can't even console them with "hey, our prez is only half black";D. For the most part tho it only seems to be the older generation that absolutely refuse to accept reality (you know, things such as birth certificates). Thanks for saying what needs to be said. - Donna Christopher
