I have said for four years longer than Mr.Dinius has meet the lowlifes of Lake County government what their mo was. I have said they will lie and cover the lies up and all others when it is found out look the other way. I have asked for a investigation to those charges I have made. Because they have the power that day is not here yet. Please let me say again that bureaucrats lied and to this date cover the lies up.I have also stated that if I be the liar then charge me with perjury and be done with me. Its their arrogance not being told they can't. keep all Lake County government workers off the jury pool for the Dinius case. - James

A few comments

I have several comments about this particular case and what it means to residents of the county.

Isn't it standard procedure for any law enforcement officer who is involved in an accident to be placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted to determine charges if any? Why wasn't this done?

I've spoken to several residents in the area of Kelseyville and Cobb about this case and we all feel that we can no longer rely on the Lake County Sheriff's department to perform in a professional, ethical and legal manner. People are afraid of these "officials" - this is not how the public should feel about those who are paid by their tax dollars to provide a safe environment for their families.

It is hoped that the State Attorney General's office will investigate this department and clean house so that the public's trust can be regained. As of now, this department is a lame duck. The District Attorney is part of this as well and is also bringing down that department's value in the public's eye.

FYI to the Sheriff's Department, it was seen and noted by many residents that your department was, I believe the correct word is tailing, the reporter from ABC News in both marked and unmarked cars during his time up in Lakeport (it is a small town, you are recognizable with or without a badge). If you are telling the truth and having nothing to hide then why are you following around a reporter?

There are several people who were present the night of the accident but are fearful for their lives to testify that they saw what has been both confirmed by other witnesses and by professional investigators, that the sailboat had it's running lights and cabin lights on. Is this how law enforcement should be perceived?

Did anyone notice the mild attendance on the Lake this 4th? Economy or news of how this accident has been handled by the county's officials? Perhaps both?

One other comment, we all make poor decisions in our lives but we can only say we made a mistake, accept the consequences of the decision and move on. The sheriff's department and the DA need to think about their next steps very carefully. The ramifications of dishonesty in the legal system are much greater than what the consequences would be for honesty. - kelseyresident

Since I didn't think the tapes existed, I hadn't requested them during my original FOIA request. I did place a followup request for the tapes but my request has been denied because they're evidence and the trial is pending. - elarson

That they "lost" these recordings, I hope at some point they are made public so we can all hear what was said and reported. I can only think that something in these recodings is going to sink the LCSO's office otherwise they would have been released before.

Would you explain, Why would I be a rat because I ask a question. Is that not why Mr. Dinius is being charged and he alone for intoxication? Is Mr. perdock given a pass? This name calling. could we nopy have talked before that had to be answer? - James

Who knew there was anybody from Lake County that was worth this kind of scandal. This is like Washington D.C. stuff. I know if it was me the story would read " Man runs over boat, killing an occupant on that boat. He turned himself in without a struggle and is now living the rest of his life in prison for being too stupid to lie." I guess that isn't interesting enough for these people. - cale_page

If I might address those with a view that Mr. Dinius is responsible for Mrs.Thornton's death. Putting all the he said, she said aside. What you are saying is that because Mr. Dinius was intoxicated and that fact alone is why he is charged? - James

"“That supervisor left the Sheriff’s Department prior to July of 2007 so we were unaware that all calls relating to the incident had been preserved until this week,” said Bauman."

Who was the supervisor who made the copy of all of the calls? Where is he/she today?

"a member of the sheriff's management staff was going through some of her older emails and found one from the supervisor who made the recordings for the records subpoena in October of 2006."

Who is the member of the management team that discovered old e-mail that contained the files?

How many computers does the Sheriff's management team have and use that are at or near three years old?

Isn't it finally time that someone requests help on this case from Federal authorities?

Civil case

In answer to Chris' question, yes, a civil case on behalf of Lynn Thornton's estate was settled last year. I've mentioned it a few times in various articles I've written about this case. The insurance for both Dinius and Perdock each paid $300,000 to Thornton's son, who is in his early 20s. Weber's insurance also paid him $100,000, and there were some other small payments back and forth, but I think in all it amounted to a settlement of about $750,000 for Thornton's son. - elarson

Civil Case Relating to the Crash?

What civil case – eventually settled in 2008 – relating to the crash is there?

This is yet another twist to the story...

Has someone already received a civil judgment in the case?

Thank you Elizabeth Larson for your great reportage! - Chris Thompson

this sounds like what my kids do. i ask if they have seen something that is missing, they say no because they know they shouldn't have been messing with it. then as soon as i get upset that i can't find it, all of a sudden they show up with it and say "i forgot i had it" and give me some excuse of why they had it. basically they had it all along but lied about it because they didn't want to get in trouble. sound familiar? - ecco

fomer dispatch supervisor bootlegs a copy of the tape and keeps it under her mattress for several years while also not noticing everybody else on earth is looking for a copy, then it magically appears when EL submits a request for it? Huh? I knew EL had God-like powers but still... Can this case get any more convoluted? Can our DA look like a bigger dope? How did EL know to ask for the tape that didn't exist? You couldn't make this stuff up, it's too weird. - smurf
