Thank you Elizabeth. I was VERY impressed by this story covering his military service. Nelson and I use to chip obsidian and make arrow points together while he would teach me some of the words from the Pomo language. On one occasion, I met him at the coast where he would go every year during the spring low tides to get abalone and net surf fish. We went hunting together and he accompanied me on some of my archaeological inspections. At 91, he still hunts and use to go after bear every year. Hoping to preserve some of his knowledge for the benefit of future generations, I started a program of videotaping interviews with Nelson this year. His knowledge of Lake County and traditional native culture is vast.
