Justice itself has many aspects, including not only our Constitutional rights of freedom of expression, a speedy trial, habeas corpus, etc., but it also the unstated rights to be accommodated, appreciated, and included. It is often easier to exclude a person who is physically, culturally, or intellectually different from the rest, both in terms of economy and our own comfort level. Inclusion, like all forms of civil interaction, must be taught. There is little in our innate behavior that tells us we should sacrifice time, expense, and the possible approval of our peers to accommodate those that are different. This moral education is the rightful duty of church, community, and family, but progress in understanding or passing on these values has been irregular at best. The testimony and perspectives of those with uncommon attributes is one of the better reminders of the necessities of accommodation and inclusion. - futhark Mon, 10 Nov 2008 07:40:02 +0100
