Hell, most of you don\'t hear what is said unless its what you choose to hear. So meany of you are wraped in your view that if the tree fell next to you little would be notice. - James

reality is defined as a shared consensus of belief. If a tree falls in the forest and the folks around it \"believe\" they heard nothing then nothing was heard. It\'s kinda how we, as a nation, now find ourselves up to our armpits in alligators, we drank that shared belief kool-aid. - Donna Christopher

\"Even science has its beliefs, or theories … it often seeks to prove its theories rather than attempting to approach reality without bias, as it claims it does.\"

I see this particularly in the medical community. People treat science as if it were hardcore factual when often times it is theory (at best) and guesswork (at worst). Take, for example, the bloodletting which went on for so many years because it was said to \"purify\" the blood and rid disease. Often times, it rid the patient of life, as well. Still, the practice continued. Another example is how it was believed by the scientific community that the sun orbited the earth rather than the other way around. Again, a scientific \"fact\" which was nothing more than a \"belief\" for so many years. Makes a person (or, at least, this person) wonder what scientific theories will be disproven in the future.

\"So what is reality? Can it exist separate from consciousness, from the physical brain and the mind that give it form and meaning? Is there anything that can actually exist apart from consciousness, standing on its own as an absolute, separate truth?\"

For myself, I don\'t really believe it can, as I believe your perception is what creates your reality (or belief systems which make up your reality). That is why we can have such diverse belief systems in life (some of which are so strong they cannot be swayed even by what some call \"fact\"). The \"fact\" is, what is true for one may not be true for another, depending strongly on belief.

\"The enemy of creativity is also fear, that is always at the very root of all aspirations to achieve dominant power, control, and authority.... there are many paths\"

There are as many \"paths\" as there are \"beliefs\", really, as each belief has the potential to reveal a path for the believer. Some paths are a bit overcrowded, which leads to stepping on people\'s toes, invading people\'s space, even killing to get ahead. Some are far less traveled, leading to the time and space to make new discoveries, learn new things, accept new ideas. The paths less traveled are usually taken by the independent thinkers, the more creative people out there because they are the ones that tend to create their own path rather than follow in the footsteps of someone else\'s. And, yes, hence they are feared by many of those who find themselves investing so much in getting ahead on through their path.

When I think of belief systems, I think of some of the things I have read concerning those who dared to be different and \"creative\" (as you say) in their belief systems and were met with ridicule. Yet, their beliefs changed the world.

\"Louis Pasteur\'s theory of germs is ridiculous fiction\". Pierre Pachet, Professor of Physiology at Toulouse, 1872

\"\"Rail travel at high speed is not possible, because passengers, unable to breathe, would die of asphyxia.\" Dr. Dionysus Lardner

“An amazing invention - but who would ever want to use one?”\" President Hayes concerning the telephone.

\"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.\"
- Ken Olson, president, chairman & founder of Digital Equipment Co, 1977

\"Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible.\" Lord Kelvin, president, Royal Society, 1895.

\"If I had thought about it, I wouldn\'t have done the experiment. The literature was full of examples that said you can\'t do this.\" Spencer Silver on the work that led to the unique adhesives for 3M \"Post-It\" Pads

\"If excessive smoking actually plays a role in the production of lung cancer, it seems to be a minor one.\" Dr. W.C. Heuper of the National Cancer Institute, as quoted in the New York Times on April 14, 1954

And... one of my personal favorites...

\"Everything that can be invented has been invented.\" Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Office of Patents, 1899. - purplegirl

If a dog is in the forest when the tree falls, he will hear it and run, and he will be laughing at you with your fingers in your ears, wondering about the true reality of the situation and pondering the true nature of the tree and its sound waves. - jmadison

This life if we choose can be overstated. It is the way it is and always has been. When we try to be smarter, rationalize what is known is to lose sight of truth. One need not look to close to see the justifition for our insanity it leaps out everyday and smacks us in the face. This path we set for ourself is the destruction all have chose before. We condone our stupidity for that view we are blinded by. I do what I do to seek my justice from those that would deny my rights, then use the system to hide their lies.Do you understand Born Locke? - James
