The Lake County Quakers and the Unitarian Universalists of Lake County are inviting people to attend a service and discussion led by speaker Robert Alpern.
Alpern is the Field Secretary for the Friends Committee on National Legislation, which is the Quaker Lobby in Washington, D.C. For more than 40 years he has worked in the field of social justice, including active involvement in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience. His topic is "Failure to Quit," in reference to charges leveled at him when he was engaging in acts of civil disobedience. He will discuss how an alert, informed and actively engaged citizenry can help those representing us to use their power to act in the public interest. A discussion will take place at 11:30 a.m., following the service. It will look at legislative priorities identified by the Friends Committee on National Legislation. Alpern will focus on what kind of things we can do as citizen lobbyists in our efforts to reach our elected officials and be more effective. Guests are encouraged to attend the service and/or the discussion following the service. |
