Pentecost is the culmination of the Great Fifty Days of Easter. In the Jewish tradition, it is often called Shavuot and commemorates the giving of the Covenant to Moses on Mt. Sinai. The early Christians were gathered for this Jewish holiday when they received the gift of Spirit and Christians use this holiday to celebrate both the birthday of the church and the gift of the Spirit. In recent years, many faith traditions have begun celebrating Peace Pentecost to pray for a rebirth of the church and for the Spirit to lead us toward peace in our fractured world. |
