Lake County Wine Studio is hosting a wine tasting and artist show event with Shed Horn Cellars and Judy V. Magoon.

The tasting and art show will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

The public is invited to come meet the newly crowned Lake County “King of Cab,” winemaker Mike Wood and his wife, Adawn.

In January of this year, Shed Horn Cellar’s 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon won a Double Gold and Best of Class at the S.F. Chronicle Wine Competition in the 24.99 to 34.99 range, and most recently garnered 1st place in the Lake County People’s Choice Wine Competition.

Wood has been making wine in Lake County for over 25 years, winning high marks and awards for both Shannon Ridge Winery and his own Shed Horn Cellars label along the way.

Wood will be pouring a $10 sampler of the Shed Horn Cellars wines, including the following current releases paired with appetizers: 08 Sauvignon Blanc - Wine X Magazine 95 points; 07 Zinfandel - People’s Choice of Lake County, Zinfandel Finalist; Wine X Magazine 93 points; 06 Cabernet Sauvignon - Winner of People’s Choice Best Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon; San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition’s Best of Class Cabernets; and 06 Petite Sirah - Wine X Magazine 90 points.

Judy Magoon’s landscape paintings are of the seemingly magical sort that makes one want to step inside to become a part of the tranquil scene; to feel the serenity that the eyes can sense, hear that bird sing and that water lap at the edge of the shore.

Naturally gifted and mostly self-taught, Magoon has studied and worked in various mediums including watercolors, oils, printmaking, sculpture, and took a pastel workshop with nationally known pastelist, Albert Handell.

Over the past few years she has concentrated on pastels, finding that she prefers that medium to render her Northern California landscapes; enabling her to produce the softness and brilliance of watercolor, as well as the strength and intensity of oils.

Magoon is drawn to the work of the California Tonalists, and the understated use of color of John Twachtman, George Innes and contemporary artist, Russell Chatham.

She has lived in Lake County since 1978 and was a founding member of the Lake Art Center in Clearlake, the Upstairs Gallery in Lakeport and the Vines Gallery in St. Helena.

A member of the Lake County Arts Council, the Konocti Plein Air Painters and a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, Magoon says she is fortunate to live in a beautiful area that provides some of the quiet spaces and special places that captivate her.

Magoon has been a participating artist in many regional, national and international shows and competitions, and has garnered numerous awards in many media. She has shown her work extensively at galleries in St. Helena, Calistoga, Santa Rosa, Sacramento and Mendocino.

Lake County Wine Studio is located on the corner of First and Main Streets in historic Upper Lake, across from the famous Tallman Hotel and Blue Wing Saloon & Café.
