Sierra Club Lake Group Rally: StepItUp against Global Warming
It's time to start getting serious about preventing catastrophic climate change. Although both its causes and their remedies are global in scope, that global solution has to be assembled piece by piece, one community and one individual at a time. April 14, 2007 has been declared a National Day of Climate Action, that will be marked by hundreds of rallies, hikes, expeditions, concerts and other events aimed at raising public awareness of the complex dangers caused by excessive emissions of greenhouse gases. The idea is also to send a simple message to Congress: cut this nation’s carbon emissions 80 percent by the year 2050.
Organizers include Bill McKibben, whose landmark 1989 book The End of Nature was among the very first works to bring the consequences of atmospheric carbon to the attention of a broad public. More information about the national campaign is available at www.stepitup2007.org
Here in Lake County, the Sierra Club wants to make sure that this vital message comes across loud and clear, and we also want to help people learn the ways each of us can play a positive role by shrinking our own "carbon footprint". To promote both of these objectives, we are sponsoring a StepItUp rally in Austin Park in Clearlake (at the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Olympic Blvd) from 10AM until 12 noon. Plans are still in their earliest formative stages, but District 3 Supervisor Denise Rushing has already agreed to join us, and we expect that other local elected officials will want to take part as well. There will certainly be music, with a solar-powered sound system (if the sun cooperates that day). Solar oven demonstration? Electric, hybrid, and biodiesel vehicles? Public transit information? We’ll probably be able to offer all of these attractions, and more besides: check out this site for updates as we get closer to the date—and in the meantime, please mark your calendars!
