Second Sunday Cinema's free film for August will be "Stop-Loss", a drama starring Ryan Phillippe and a superb ensemble cast. Why show a Hollywood movie? Because an extremely well-made feature such as this can take us deeper into the experiences of others -- in this case, those of young American soldiers returning home from their searing experiences in Iraq. Some are "stop-lossed", meaning the military surprises them by requiring they go back to Iraq to serve another rotation there. Other young soldiers find that even though they're back in their home town with family and friends, they really "can't go home again," since their experiences in the war have changed them and set them apart. This film is super well directed, and the actors are astonishingly good. PLEASE NOTE: This film is the first of two feature films SSC will screen in August. On Sunday August 17th we will screen "The Reflecting Pool," a drama about 9/11. The star and director of this independent film will be present to answer questions after the film. |
