Lake County's own Tom Slaight will be screening his self-made 20-minute video, "White Haze and Jet Trails” at the Second Sunday Cinema's July 13 event. When Slaight moved here a number of years ago, one of Lake County's most appealing features was its pristine blue skies. In 2002 Tom started noticing jet trails – not the ordinary ones we see all the time, the ones that fade after a few seconds. These new trails did not fade – indeed, they grew and grew and formed strange appendages. Sometimes they grew until the entire sky was "white haze.” Slaight, who's been involved with photography for years, began video taping these anomalous trails, and asked, "What's going on up there?" He has no conspiracy theories. He does want answers. NBC news in Los Angeles screened a story on this phenomenon, using Tom's video clips. The second feature of the evening will be "The Seeds of Deception," which presents meticulously researched information about the dangers of GE (genetically engineered) or GMO (genetically modified organisms) food. Forty percent of the corn (to name just one crop) we eat in the USA is genetically engineered. And corn is in everything, from processed foods and beverages containing high fructose corn syrup to the corn-fed cattle, pigs, chicken and even farmed fish we eat. The testing to determine if eating these new GE crops is healthy for humans or other living beings is profoundly inadequate. And those tests run, which showed scary unhealthful effects, were buried. What ties these two films together, besides their high quality and their concern for human health, is that both ask if we're being subjected to long-term "scientific" tests without our knowledge or consent. If so, this seriously impacts our American democracy, as well as our well-being. The showing will take place at the Clearlake United Methodist Church, 14521 Pearl Ave., near Mullen, in Clearlake. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for socializing and snacks. The film starts at 6 p.m.
