"Hinthel Gaanula" is a very special film -- especially for all Lake Co. residents. This excellent documentary was created largely by Lake Co's own James Bluewolf, also our county Poet Laureate from 2000 through 2003. Mr. Bluewolf will join us this evening to speak briefly about his film and to share one of his poems. He will remain to discuss the film and Lake Co. history after the movie.

"Hinthel Gaanula" translates into "Talking Indian", and presents the history of the many autonomous peoples who lived in this area starting from 4,000 to 8,000 years ago (as confirmed by the carbon-dating of artifacts).

Until 1832, when the first Euro-American invaders arrived, life around the lake was largely idyllic. Food was both abundant and healthful -- so much so that many elders lived well into their 100's.

With the arrival of the caucasians, their quality of life plummeted, as land was stolen, indigenous peoples enslaved, indentured and murdered -- all with impunity. In fact, the US Senate connived openly to prevent the enactment of a signed treaty between invaders and indigenous peoples -- for 50 years, thus ensuring the seizure of the overwhelming majority of Native lands.

Although this history is a sad and shameful one, this fine film never descends into rancor. Thus, it allows the viewer to remain open to the facts, and to be moved by them. Highly recommended.

As always, Second Sunday Cinema Films are free. The doors open at 5:30 for grabbing a seat, a snack perhaps, and for socializing with your friends and neighbors. The films starts at 6 PM. We hope you'll join us!
