| John Steinbeck was the author of more than 11 novels, including “In Dubious Battle,” “Of Mice and Men,” “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Travels with Charley.” He was known as a California novelist for his “dust bowl fiction” covering topics such as migrant farm workers and the Great Depression, and his engaging portrayals or working men and women. Although he won the Nobel Peace Prize for literature in 1962, during his lifetime he never felt that the American public accepted him as an author. He died in 1968. If you would like to know more about John Steinbeck and his works visit Wild About Books at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 14. Local historian Harold Riley has created a presentation around the Pulitzer Prize-winning author that will educate and entertain students, scholars and anyone interested in John Steinbeck. Riley began his interest in John Steinbeck in the 1980s after attending the John Steinbeck Festival in Salinas where the author grew up. He has much to share, and will be available for questions afterward. |
