Second Sunday Cinema's free film for May is a real winner: “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill,” a documentary by Judy Irving.

The film will be screened on Sunday, May 11.

This highly enjoyable film introduces us to the red-headed conures (and one with a blue head an outcast) that are thriving in the distinctly non-tropical city of San Francisco.

Since February of 2007, Second Sunday Cinema has screened documentaries every month that address the most crucial issues of our challenging times: the war on Iraq; global warming and environmental degradation; factual inconsistencies in the official explanation for 9/11; the United States' growing debt, both personal and national.

Now, spring is bustin' out and it's time to take a break to restore our smiles and our souls.

This lovely film is about feral parrots and a nearly feral man and what happens when their paths cross.

Mark Bittner was homeless for many years and living on the streets. Suddenly Bittner, “with no visible means of support,” finds and moves into a vacant home with lots and lots of parrots outside also "living on the streets.”

He begins caring for them, feeding them and helping them when they're sick or injured. Thus begins a relationship that is ultimately a major transformative experience for Bittner, the gentle caregiver.

The Washington Post says of this film, “It's a thoroughly absorbing portrait of one man's discipline and commitment and yes, spiritual transformation. Quite simply, it is a beautiful film, in both form and content. You'll laugh. You'll cry. And your heart is guaranteed to soar” at the surprise ending.

In June, Second Sunday Cinema will almost certainly return to showing pertinent, important documentaries. So in May, come to see the parrots and their dramas. This is one for the heart.

As always, this free film will be screened at the Clearlake United Methodist Church at 14521 Pearl Ave. near Mullen in Clearlake.

We open our doors at 5:30 p.m. so folks can grab a good seat and a snack, and can talk with their neighbors. The film starts at 6 p.m., and is followed by the optional opportunity to hang around to discuss the film or to network.

The atmosphere is congenial and you can't beat the price. We hope to see you there!

Location: Clearlake United Methodist Church at 14521 Pearl Ave. near Mullen in Clearlake.
